Railroad town history and a strong industry

The small railroad town of Hagan in Evans County traces its story back to the late 1800s, when the Savannah and Western Railroad brought new opportunities to the pine-covered countryside. Incorporated in 1906 and named for Susan Hagan, the wife of one of the town’s early settlers, this community quickly grew around sawmills and timber.

Today, the tiny community is home to about 950 residents and continues to benefit from its agricultural and industrial roots. The nearby Claxton-Evans County Industrial Park supports local employment, while the proximity to Georgia Southern University attracts students, staff and alumni looking to make Hagan their long-term home after graduation.
“It has a really small-town country and farmland,” says Dakota Perkins, an agent with Weichert Realtors–Webb & Associates. "It's about an hour-and-a-half away from Savannah. There isn't too much traffic here, so it's an easy drive when you're looking for a weekend getaway with plenty of stuff to do."

Ranch-style homes and new farmhouse designs

Hagan’s housing consists of ranch-style homes, traditional houses and contemporary farmhouse designs. Most properties are set on large, unfenced lots. The area includes many older homes, and new developments are gradually appearing on the market. Home prices here range from $200,000 to $350,000 depending on lot size, age and renovations.

School choices and college pathways for Hagan families

Local kids can start school at Claxton Elementary, then continue to Claxton Middle School: both schools earn C-grades from Niche. Claxton High School earns a C-plus and offers a college and career academy called The Den where pathway programs include firefighting, nursing and teaching.

Parks, golf and growth nearby

Families in Hagan enjoy time outdoors at the Hagan Children’s Park, where kids can play and neighbors often gather for community events. Golf enthusiasts visit Evans Heights Golf Club, which currently offers a 9-hole course and has plans to expand in the near future.

Local dining, shopping and vineyard getaways

Cowart’s Restaurant is a popular diner on Strickland Street, serving sandwiches and homestyle Southern dishes. Residents often head to the nearby Claxton Square Shopping Center, which has a Food Fresh for groceries. Many local businesses line Main Street a couple of miles east, including Claxton Bakery for fresh pastries, and Harry’s Barbeque and Seafood for ribs and Brunswick stew. Watermelon Creek Vineyard is about 20 minutes from Hagan. Residents visit here to sample local wines and unwind among the scenic vines and peaceful outdoor spaces.

Highway access and quick routes to Claxton

Hagan sits along U.S. Highway 280, which runs east to the neighboring town of Claxton and west toward Vidalia and farther on to Columbus providing a direct link across southern Georgia. Georgia State Route 129 crosses through Evans County, leading north toward Metter and south toward Bellville, connecting residents to nearby communities and regional highways. These convenient routes make commuting, shopping, and travel to larger towns and cities accessible for Hagan residents. For wider travel, Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is about an hour east by Highway 280 and Interstate 16, giving access to domestic and international flights. Local and regional transit services are available by reservation, and Claxton-Evans County Airport provides options for general aviation travelers.
