Neighborhood in Hagerstown, Maryland
Washington County 21740, 21795
Home between Hagerstown and Williamsport
While Hagerstown is known for its late-19th century historical significance, prospective owners in this neighborhood will notice more distinct midcentury sensibilities. “Most of the stock around here are ranch-styles, Cape Cods and cottages because it’s a fairly old neighborhood. It’s also a fairly small community, so homes don’t pop up that often,” Zaldivar says. “They mostly have small front yards, small backyards and a driveway if you’re lucky. If the homes have large lots, they rarely show up on the market.” Along Virginia Avenue, the main road into town, buyers looking for detached single-family homes will also find American Foursquares built in the 1930s. The occasional duplex can also be spotted, set back from the road by concrete sidewalks that lead to shared front porches. Prices for single-family units range from around $210,000 to over $400,000 depending on the number of bedrooms and lot size, while duplexes range in price from around $240,000 to about $300,000. Recent residential development has been limited, so houses tend to leave the market quickly. “A lot of what is happening around here is commercial development, so people that like the convenience of being just across the street from restaurants and whatever else,” Zaldivar says. The incomparable Marty Snook Park
On the southern edge of Halfway stands Marty Snook Memorial Park, an extensive outdoor recreation area that offers plenty of amenities. Residents meet up with family for cookouts around the grills, play tennis and pickleball on the outdoor courts, cheer on Little League players at the baseball complex or spend summer afternoons by the pool. The park also features an outdoor fitness area that is free for public use, a storybook playground filled with carvings of mythical creatures and the Central Bark Dog Park, where four-legged friends can stretch their legs. For a more naturalistic experience, locals can head 2 miles up the road to Hagerstown City Park to traverse the paved walking paths, feed the ducks around Lower Lake and peruse the permanent collection at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts. Four miles to the west is Williamsport and the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath, a partially paved hiking trail that spans nearly 185 scenic miles between its namesake canal and the Potomac River.Hitting the books in Halfway
Halfway is zoned for Washington County Public Schools such as Lincolnshire Elementary, which Niche rates a B-minus. Lincolnshire hosts community events for students and their families throughout the summer, including reptile shows and musical performances. Children may then proceed to Springfield Middle, which earns a B and is Niche’s No. 2 Best Public Middle School in Washington County. Williamsport High, rated B-minus, has served the community since 1970 and offers an Academy of Finance program for students interested in pursuing careers in the financial service industry. The many attractions of downtown Hagerstown
Halfway is a short 2.5-mile trip down Virginia Avenue from the newest addition to Hagerstown’s skyline, Meritus Park. At this brand-new stadium, neighbors meet up to cheer on local baseball team, the Flying Boxcars, and catch up with one another over microbrew beers. Just down the road is Hub City Vinyl, Maryland’s largest brick-and-mortar record store, which hosts live music year-round in its historic venue. Parents with young children will enjoy Discovery Station, a hands-on science museum for kids open on weekends. Closer to home, Regal Theaters at Valley Mall is a comfortable place to catch the latest summer blockbusters, and Turner’s Skate Palace remains a popular weekend destination.
Highway convergence in Hub City
One of Halfway’s biggest draws is its access to two of Maryland’s most-traveled highways. Interstates 70 and 81 converge at the neighborhood’s southwestern edge, making commutes to West Virginia, Pennsylvania or the rest of Maryland simple. Frederick is a quick 27-mile drive southeast along I-70, and Washington, D.C. is 40 miles farther. “Hagerstown is sometimes called Hub City because of where it is, and you see that more and more because people are willing to add a bit to their commute to get what they want in a home,” Zaldivar says. “It’s also because a lot of workplaces are still at least hybrid, so if you’re only going into the office two or three days a week, adding an extra 30 to 40 minutes of commute is not that unreasonable.” Hagerstown Regional Airport is 6 miles north of the neighborhood on I-81, offering direct flights to vacation destinations such as Orlando, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. From Valley Mall to downtown Hagerstown
The Valley Mall is the central shopping destination of Halfway, where locals will find their nearest Target, a Grocery Outlet for bargain pantry staples and a Sam’s Club. On hot days, folks meet up here to walk the mile loop and browse the selection at the 102 retailers before grabbing a midmorning soul food meal at Chris Cross Cafe. “Most of the restaurants in Halfway specifically are concentrated around the Valley Mall,” Zaldivar says. “Black Rock is an awesome steakhouse. It’s a chain, but this is the only one in Maryland. The storefronts have fluctuated a bit recently, but they also aren’t the only options since it’s a quick 3-mile drive to get to Central Hagerstown.” In Central, residents can enjoy authentic German cooking at Schamnkerl Stube or indulge in modern pub food at Broad Axe before stopping into Krumpe’s Do-Nuts, a legendary local establishment where the pastries have been handmade every evening from 7 to 11 p.m. since 1934.
