A shoe-shaped house attracts visitors
There’s a house and it looks like a shoe. But that’s where the similarities between the York County borough of Hallam and the children's nursery rhyme end.
“Hallam is a small town in the suburban area of York County,” says Faruk Sisic, a Realtor with Cavalry Realty. “It’s pretty close to all of the amenities and major roads, but it’s most famous for the house that’s shaped like a shoe.” Having been televised statewide and nationally, the shoe house is Hallam’s most notable feature. The two-story house is shaped like a woman’s shoe and was built in 1948 by Mahlon Haines, a shoemaker. Haines built the house to promote his business. The Shoe House is now a popular tourist attraction.
Nonetheless, the shoe-shaped house is not solely what attracts potential homebuyers to Hallam, Sisic says. “They like living in a small town that feels like a small town.” With a population of just over 2,700 people, Hallam is part of the York-Hanover Metropolitan Statistical Area and the York-Hanover-Gettysburg Combined Statistical Area. The town is located in a rural area, surrounded by farms and forests, with a history that dates back to the early 18th century, when German immigrants founded it. Hallam was originally known as Grist Valley, after the creek that runs through the town. The town was renamed Hallam in 1855, after a township in England.
