Lakes and outdoor activities are core to Hamburg Township
The rural community of Hamburg Township may have started in the 1830s as a farming community, but these days the area has developed into a resort destination, with the local lakes serving as a major attraction. Some homes back onto the water, allowing private fishing and boating docks, especially around Winans Lake and Strawberry Lake. Properties away from the water tend to be larger. “[This has] a lot of boating, kayaking, canoeing and lake activities (along with) lake homes, many of which have become year-round houses,” says Rick Beaudin, a realtor with Keller Williams Realty Living and a township resident.
A mix of single-family homes with some HOA activity
The median home price here is $420,000, higher than national and state numbers. Common styles include New Traditionals, ranch-styles and Craftsman. Land is available. A homeowners association oversees some properties, but Beaudin says the township is “not overly commercialized.” Beaudin says the area includes a mix of long-established families and younger families choosing to stay. “People love it so much that they don’t leave,” says Beaudin.
Lakes for boating, trails, recreation areas and golfing
The townships' multiple lakes can accommodate boating and fishing activities. Zukey Lake features a marina, while numerous private docks and launches are dotted throughout the area. The Mike Levine Lakelands Trail is a 34-mile biking and hiking path that cuts through the community along an old railroad.
Green spaces include Manly W. Bennett Memorial Park, which has sports courts, playgrounds, soccer fields and disc golf. The park hosts the Hamburg Family Fun Fest, an annual event with many amenities and attractions, including rides, games and a petting zoo. The Brighton Recreation Area, on the northern end of the community, features multiple hiking and horseback riding trails, along with fishing and hunting spots
The township has multiple golfing venues, including the Rush Lake Hills Golf Club, which features a 6,200-yard layout and hosts local tournaments. Whispering Pines Golf Club is 6,300 yards long and has event space. The private Lakeland Golf and Country Club offers a Par 72 layout and a private beach for members only on Winans Lake.
Events and college sports in Ann Arbor are 13 miles south.
Flooding risk near the water
Flood maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency show that the areas around the Huron River and lakes can flood.
Students zoned for several school districts
Hamburg Township students are zoned for multiple school districts, including Brighton Area Schools and Dexter Community Schools, ranked A on Niche. Whitmore Lake Public School District and Howell Public Schools have a B. Pinckney Community Schools has a B-minus grade.
Dining along Highway 36 with more options in Brighton
Restaurants are located along Michigan Highway 36 and feature a mix of chains and local spots. The Zukey Lake Tavern serves seafood, barbecue and pizza. Mimi’s Diner serves breakfast along with Greek dishes and sandwiches. On the eastern end of the township, 36 Social has burgers and salads.
The township has a Kroger and smaller shops along Highway 36. Brighton has more grocery stores and big-box retailers, including Costco. Trinity Health Medical Center is 12 miles north.
Highway connections, but a distance from Detroit and Flint airports
Highway 36 connects to U.S. Highway 23, leading to Interstate 96 to the north and south to Ann Arbor. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is 39 miles southeast, while Flint’s Bishop International Airport is 40 miles north.
