Tabb is one of the most desirable York County neighborhoods
Tabb, Virginia, is a semi-rural/semi-residential community in south York County, between the York River and the Chesapeake Bay. Known for its schools, top-notch neighborhoods and coastal attractions, Tabb has grown into one of the most desirable York County neighborhoods where families seek out new and well-updated traditional homes. York County is part of "America's Historic Triangle,” made up of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Yorktown. The county stretches along the York River, from North Williamsburg south to Newport News. While Tabb uses the mailing address of Yorktown, Tabb is 10 miles south of historic Yorktown and is much closer to the peninsula city of Newport News.
Predominantly rural until the late 20th century, Tabb has grown rapidly in recent decades and is home to about 23,800 residents. The north edge of Tabb sits along the Poquoson River and offers 20th and 21st-century subdivisions accented by undeveloped acres of native Virginia pine trees, including Loblolly, white, and shortleaf. With its primarily residential nature, Tabb provides a peaceful, family-oriented atmosphere and is home to the highest-ranked school district in all of Hampton Roads.
Waterfront and recently built New Traditional homes abound
“Tabb is a super desirable neighborhood for its proximity to employers, schools and neighboring cities,” says April Ford, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. Heavily wooded subdivisions offer a variety of housing options to suit different preferences and budgets, Four-bedroom brick homes from the early 2000s, located in The Greenlands have recently sold from $550,000 to $675,000. Recently built New Traditional homes in Taylor Farms, with swimming pools, have recently sold from $1,200,000 to $1,700,000.
Ranch-style homes, split levels and waterfront retreats are popular, particularly along the Poquoson River. Riverfront homes offer large front yards and marinas for fishing and exploring the waterways. Those seeking low-maintenance housing will find condos and duplexes listed for under $300,000. “Condos are hard to find in York County. Once they're on the market, they’re gone within days,” Ford says.
Highly rated York County School Division public schools put Tabb on the map
One of the key reasons families are drawn to Tabb is because of highly rated York County School Division public schools. Niche ranks the district as number one in the Norfolk area, with A-rated Tabb Elementary earning the National Blue Ribbon award in 2022. Tabb Middle is the number one best public middle school in the area, while A-plus rated Tabb High stands out for its academics, outstanding football team and extracurricular clubs. The College of William and Mary, Christopher Newport University and Hampton University draw students from across the country.
Residents ride bikes and horses
Tabb is home to eight community parks that offer lakes, pools and plenty of walking and biking trails. Harwood’s Mill Park, hidden away on Oriana Road, is a serene location built around a 265-acre freshwater reservoir. Locals enjoy fishing, mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking. Horse lovers frequent Kentucky Farms, a family-owned business saddled with a love for horses and the community.
Restaurants, retailers and grocery stores are close to home
Residents head to nearby Walmart, Kroger and Food Lion for groceries. The largest shopping mall in the area, Patrick Henry Mall, is 4 miles west of Tabb and features more than 50 retailers and eateries including Sephora, Foot Locker and Chick-fil-A. Locals visit Alpha Pitt Smokers for its slow-smoked beef brisket. Andrea’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria serves homemade pasta and pizzas paired with a sophisticated selection of wine. For a sweet treat, Donutz on a Stick & Ice Cream offers sundaes and made-to-order fresh donuts.
Residents drive much of the time, but bus routes are increasing
Most residents in Tabb will drive to work, shopping and recreation destinations. Interstate 64 is minutes from the east edge of Tabb, which connects residents south to Virginia Beach or northwest to Charlottesville. However, the continued growth of York, Williamsburg and James City Counties pushes them to consider additional options, including expanded bus routes and high-speed rail lines through the Virginia Peninsula.
From the local YMCA to Virginia Beach, events surround Tabb every season
Tabb offers many family-friendly activities such as book clubs, trivia nights and craft events at the Tabb Library. Victory Family YMCA offers swim lessons and summer camps.
From colonial-era-inspired Christmas celebrations in Williamsburg to summertime beachfront music festivals in Virginia Beach, there is no shortage of fun along the Virginia Peninsula. Residents head to Yorktown at Christmas for the Lighted Boat Parade. Summer brings locals and visitors a long list of music festivals, from the “Something in the Water” festival to the Virginia Beach Reggae Festival.
