An established town continues to develop outside of Boston

Established in 1727, Hanover is an established Massachusetts town and suburban community outside of Boston. Once known as home to one of the nation's largest ship manufacturing industries, the town has evolved into a strong community that prides itself on its convenient location, its involved citizens and access to parks and schools. “Hanover’s location is one thing I moved for,” says Anne Fitzgerald, broker with William Raveis & Home Services and Hanover resident since 1996. “It’s close to Boston and Cape Cod, so you can commute to either. It’s the best of both worlds because you have the ocean in one direction and the city in the other.” Still, Fitzgerald emphasizes that the town’s growth keeps people around and lets them stay close to home for most of their everyday needs. “You never have to leave Hanover because there has been so much development,” she says. “The town has become more developed in terms of shopping and convenience.” Another draw for residents is the sense of community. “Hanover is a close-knit New England town with a close-knit community,” says local Realtor Lauren Nauman. “The community is one where if someone is in need, people band together to help.”

Traditional single-family home with sizes that run the gamut

Residential pockets are scattered across the network of streets in Hanover. The town’s housing stock varies in style, though traditional New England-style single-family homes are common. Sizes may range from small bungalows to larger estates and waterside properties. “Home styles run the gamut, from gorgeous properties along the north river with water access to smaller homes of ranch styles and split-levels,” Fitzgerald says, adding that individual subdivisions may look very different. “Every corner has a different vibe; you’ll be on meandering roads and never know that the commercial area is half a mile away or that there is traffic nearby.” The median single-family home price is about $770,000, though prices range from $400,000 up to $3.87 million, with differences in cost driven primarily by size and location. Townhouse prices hover around the $800,000 mark.

Recreation at Forge Pond Park

Nestled along a narrow pond, Forge Pond Park is a 40-acre tract that serves as a magnet for outdoor recreational activities. “The park is a hub for spring and fall sports, from soccer to baseball and lacrosse,” Nauman says. “It also has paved walkways that are great for dog-walking.” The athletic facility features baseball and softball diamonds and three multi-use fields. Trails snake for over 4 miles through densely wooded areas and around the pond, offering scenic views of local flora and fauna. A boat launch on the pond allows kayakers and canoers to take to the green waters. In the winter, the park features an ice-skating rink. Additional hiking trails include the Hanover Greenway trail and the Colby-Phillips loop trail; the latter leads to an observation deck overlooking Cushing Brook Marsh.

Commerce concentrated along Route 53

Most of Hanover’s commerce resides in the eastern part of town along Route 53, where clusters of shopping plazas house various stores, restaurants and fast-food chains. Formerly the Hanover Mall, the recently completed Hanover Crossing fulfills retail needs. “Hanover Crossing is an outdoor mall that isn’t 100% occupied yet but has a nice mix of big-box retailers and other small, privately owned businesses,” Fitzgerald says. Department stores like Macy’s sit shoulder-to-shoulder with stores like Sephora and several restaurants, ranging from chains like First Watch to refined Italian at Evviva Trattoria. Grocery options within the mall include Trader Joe’s and Market Basket. “Further up 53, there are more shopping plazas with fine restaurants that people love, especially ALBA,” Fitzgerald says. Located in Merchant’s Row shopping square, ALBA on 53 is an elevated eatery serving contemporary takes on classic dishes in a modern, trendy atmosphere.

Celebrating Hanover Day

Every summer, the town celebrates the community during Hanover Day, which takes place in June. Though the fest’s name suggests otherwise, the celebrations last a full weekend, with live music performances, craft vendor showcases and a carnival lasting for two days. “Every year, tents and vendors set up in the center of town,” Fitzgerald says. “They have everything for kids and families, whether you browse the tents, grab an ice cream or kids get their face painted. It’s a great community event that everyone seems to enjoy.” The event also includes a car show, fireworks and a 5K race. All proceeds of the fest are given back to the community through grants for education, arts and more.

Transportation options for commuters to Boston and the Cape

State Route 3 cuts along the town’s eastern side, connecting to Cape Cod and Boston. The town is also close to train stations in Abington and Whitman, which are served by commuter routes to Boston. Boston Logan International Airport is about 25 miles north.
