Haralson, 5 miles south of Senoia, features sprawling land, dense wood and quintessential country living without a long commute to grocery stores or local shopping and dining. According to Leslie Mcclelland, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Bullard Realty, who has lived in Haralson for 22 years, “People move here because they want a piece of the country. Homes are on as little as one acre to hundreds of acres.”
Drive down two-lane roads between dense oak and pine trees and find homes set far back from the road, many with long driveways and picket fences surrounding their large lots. You might get stuck behind a biker, as locals love to ride through the scenic country roads. In the woods behind homes, a small pond or a branch of Dead Oak Creek may run through. In the high $200,000 to $300,000 range, you can find a ranch-style property with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. For around $500,000, you can get a colonial- or Craftsman-style home with four or five bedrooms on half an acre or more. A house priced at $600,000 usually sits on an acre or more, and as prices rise from there, so do lots and home sizes.
Students in Haralson are zoned for the Coweta County School District and can attend Eastside Elementary School, East Coweta Middle School and East Coweta High School. All schools receive a B-plus rating from Niche. The high school has a program called REACH that caters to students deemed to have a high degree of intellectual or creative ability, are highly motivated and/or excel in specific academic fields.
Within Haralson, there are three spots that locals frequent—William’s Grocery, Southern Charm Feed Store and La Casa del Taco. “Williams Grocery has been a landmark here forever,” says Mcclelland. “They’re known for their sausages. When Jimmy Carter was president, he used to have people get him sausage from there and send them to him.” You might overlook this modest building behind a gas station just driving by, but this is a place where locals hang out and catch up with each other. At Southern Charm Feed Store, you can find a wide variety of feed for all kinds of animals, from the cows and horses you own to the deer that run through your backyard. Mcclelland says, “This where everyone goes to get their feed for their animals.” A few minutes down the road, is La Casa Del Taco, a food truck with a shaded awning area where customers can eat outside. “People drive into Haralson just for this taco truck,” says Mcclelland.
At Haralson Park, ride your bike or take a walk on one of the paved trails. Kids can chase each other around the playground while parents watch them from a shaded picnic area. This is also a popular spot for cookouts or school reunions.
Five miles north of the neighborhood, in Senoia, locals can find everything they need. “Locals look at Haralson as an extension of Senoia,” says Mcclelland. Bungalow-style buildings that look like houses line Main Street and, inside, are small shops and eateries. Fun fact: Mcclelland says, “Those were built to be part of the set for ‘The Walking Dead,’ which was filmed in Senoia.” This little street is a great place to spend a warm Sunday window shopping or catching up with friends over lunch. “We like to go here because there’s a lot of stuff around—breweries, restaurants, little stores—but it’s more laid back than Atlanta,” says Mcclelland. Outside of Senoia’s small downtown area, there’s the Senoia Village Shopping Center, where you can get groceries from Publix or drive through Chick-fil-A for a quick bite to eat. Also, there are Dunkin’, Pizza Hut, UPS, McDonald’s and some gas stations.
You’ll have to travel about 7 miles to the northwest to get to Georgia State Route 54, which will take you to Atlanta, about 40 miles north. “I usually travel into Senoia, Peachtree City or Newnan if I need to go shopping, and it’s not too bad of a commute, using back roads,” says Mclelland. Most people who live in Haralson commute to surrounding areas for work.
