Rural coastal neighborhood full of outdoorsy things to do
Near the southernmost tip of Oregon, Harbor is a rural coastal community with lush parks, mom-and-pop shops and miles of sandy shoreline. U.S. Route 101—also known as the Oregon Coast Highway—runs north-south through Harbor, with views of dense, hilly forestland to the east and the bright blue waters of the Pacific Ocean to the west. Tourism, lumber and fishing are some of the area's major industries. Kalina Clewell, a broker with Blue Pacific Realty and a longtime local, says retirees relocate here for the mild climate, and families with young children come for the outdoor recreation and strong, small-town spirit. “We have a lot of really decent people here. You see people come together to put on fundraisers and events. If there’s anybody that needs something, people try to pitch in,” she says.

Paddling around in the Chetco River
Residents here have miles of Pacific coastline to explore, as well as the turquoise Chetco River estuary just northwest, where they enjoy paddleboarding and kayaking. Folks can store their fishing boats in the Port of Brookings Harbor marina, and a few blocks inland, Beachfront RV Park is a full hook-up site with views of the pristine Pacific Ocean. Just south, the McVay Rock State Recreation Site is a well-known spot for whale watching, strolling the pebbly beach and playing through the nine-hole McVay Rock Disc Golf Course. Two miles west of the community, the 9-acre Chetco Point Park features a half-mile paved trail to Chetco’s rocky bluff, which overlooks waves crashing against the rock formations near distant Mill Beach. For a break from the ocean, the public, 18-hole Salmon Run Golf Course is 4 miles east.
Residents can swim in the Chetco river on warm summer days.

Homes with ocean views in Harbor
Single-family homes here sit along gravel-and-asphalt roads lined with ponderosa pines and fir trees. Many of these homes are former mill houses from the 1950s that have often been renovated. Clewell says, " Buyers can find homes here starting in the low 300,000s and going into the several million range.” Scattered throughout the northern area, late 20th-century and 2010s manufactured homes feature vinyl exteriors with small, wooden front porches and small, grassy backyards with space for RV parking; some sit in gated 55+ communities like Emerald Coast Estates, which offers a heated indoor community pool and paved, flower-lined pathways between homes. Manufactured homes here range from about $200,000 to $550,000. Further south, late 20th-century ranch-style homes and Queen Anne-inspired new traditional houses built in the ‘80s feature spacious decks with ocean views and open, pine-tree-covered yards; many of these properties sit on half-acre lots within walking distance of public beach access, and prices range between $650,000 and $1.5 million.

Classic car show at annual Azalea Festival
Every Memorial Day weekend, Harbor locals head about a mile north to Azalea Park to celebrate the three-day-long Azalea Festival. Visitors can snack on food from local vendors while jamming out to live music at the outdoor stage or check out shiny, classic cars at the Curry County Cruisers Car Show in the parking lot. In August, Port of Brookings Harbor hosts the annual Pirates of the Pacific Festival, where volunteers dressed in billowy shirts and eye patches put on blacksmith demonstrations and musical performances for festivalgoers.
Shopping local along the scenic Oregon Coast Highway
Near the eastern border, the Oregon Coast Highway is dotted with local shops and businesses. South Coast Human Society Thrift Store offers racks of gently used clothes and home goods, while Lila’s Resale Furniture and Collectables sells antique furniture and art décor. On Wednesdays and Saturdays, folks can shop for locally grown produce, beef and other artisan foods at the popular Brookings Harbor Farmers Market.
A few blocks north, Mattie’s Pancake House whips up traditional American breakfast plates fixed with chicken fried steak, cheesy omelets and, of course, warm pancakes. Further north near the Chetco River, Hungry Clam near the Chetco River serves fresh fish-and-chip bowls. Nearby Slugs ‘n Stones ‘n Ice Cream Cones features over 30 different ice cream flavors, as well as a drive-up window.
Chetco Outdoor Store sells fishing and boating gear for local outdoorsmen.
Gift shops can be found in the Port of Brookings area.

Art competitions at Brookings-Harbor High
The area is zoned for the Brookings Harbor School district. Kids here can start at Kalmiopsis Elementary, which earns an overall C-plus from Niche, then continue to the C-rated Azalea Middle. Brookings-Harbor High, also rated a C is known for its successful visual arts program; in 2024, students in the BHS Art Department won 2nd place overall at the State Visual Arts Competition.

Driving up and down the coast to downtown Brookings
U.S. 101, the Oregon Coast Highway, runs near the eastern border of Harbor, traveling the entire Oregon coastline and leading 5 miles south to the northern border of California. Downtown Brookings is roughly a mile drive west via U.S. 101, and along this route, folks can board Greyhound and Coastal Express buses. Harbor is a car-dependent community, but people occasionally bike along Oceanview Drive and Lower Harbor Road further west. Curry Medical Center is 2 miles west of the area, and Del Norte County Airport in Crescent City, CA is a 27-mile drive south.
Harbor neighborhood is connect to the rest of the Oregon and Cailfornia coast via Nighway 101.

Rainy days may cause flooding
Clewell says Harbor does receive a fair amount of rain during winter, which helps keep the area green and any residing wildfire smoke from the Siskiyou National Forest at bay. Some areas of the neighborhood may be at risk of flooding during rainfall, and Curry County recommends homeowners keep a kit filled with water, tools and medication for emergency situations.
