A litany of amenities

Less than 5 miles from Ogden and less than 14 from the Wasatch Mountains, Harrisville offers all the small-town vibes typical of recently rural communities in northern Utah. Locals put on events and seasonal celebrations throughout the year and flock to the city parks at the center of town. There’s even an established shopping center at the south end of town, one of the first to pop up outside of Ogden proper. “It’s got that small-town feel but there are definitely city amenities,” says Ashley Kinney, an Ogden local and Brick Realty Realtor. “A lot of the clients I’ve worked with, who have relocated here from outside the area, have said that it’s like living near Boulder, Colorado without the Boulder, Colorado price,” she says. “You’re only 10 minutes away from this vibrant, eclectic, artsy city, but you have everything you could need right in your own backyard, too, including the mountains.”

Any excuse to gather

Locals gather for community events throughout the year, from the annual Easter Egg Hunt at Harrisville Park every spring to the Santa at the Cabin gathering and parade each December. In October, there’s the annual Fall Festival, which kicks off with a one-mile run. Festivities continue with carnival games and trunk-or-treat and end with a fireworks show. In the summer, there are movies playing every Friday night on a big outdoor screen in Harrisville Park, weather permitting. And once a month, from March to December, local seniors ages 55 and up gather for lunch at the Harrisville City Cabin.

Get outside

Harrisville youth softball and baseball leagues practice at Independence Park beginning in April each year. The expansive park is also home to the city’s disc golf course and a paved, half-mile trail for walkers and runners. There’s a large playground with climbing structures and swings, including one that’s high-backed and accessible, too. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the sprinklers and other water features at the park’s splash pad haven’t run as regularly as they used to each summer. But kids flock there anyway to use the splash pad’s smooth, concrete surface to scooter, rollerblade and skateboard. Nearby, Harrisville Pond is stocked with rainbow trout four times a year for fishing year-round. At the Harrisville Community Garden, locals can reserve plots of land to grow everything from produce to flowers.

Early 2000s-era homes

Harrisville’s well-maintained Split Level, Traditional and Modern Farmhouse-style homes sell for between $330,000 and $550,000. Most are stand-alone, but there are some townhome and duplex-style houses here, too. Many were built in the early 2000s, but construction here is ongoing. “A lot of these northern Utah communities were rural, farming communities, so these towns with actual neighborhoods are all pretty new,” says Kinney, adding that the age of homes here, along with their price, is part of Harrisville’s appeal.

Weber County schools

Local kids attend schools in the Weber School District, which serves the whole of Weber County with the exception of Ogden proper. Many youngsters go to Pioneer Elementary, which earns a C from Niche, and Orion Junior High, which earns a C-plus. Older students go to Fremont High School, which earns a B. Teens at Fremont High can take advantage of the school’s wide array of AP and concurrent enrollment courses to get a jump start on college while still in high school. Fremont students can also apply to participate in the school’s International Baccalaureate program.

Big box stores and popular chain eateries

For groceries and other everyday essentials, many residents head to the south end of town. Off North Harrisville Road, a Walmart Supercenter anchors a shopping center with a Petco, Supercuts, Verizon, Seagull Book, Maurices and Sally Beauty. There’s also a Lowe’s nearby, as well as popular chain eateries like Wienerschnitzel and Chili’s. For food with more local flair, head just north to Javier’s Authentic Mexican Food, famous for its friendly staff and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The original location of the regional chain, Zeppe’s Italian Water Ice, is nearby as well, offering all kinds of sweet treats.

Getting around

US Route 89 runs through the middle of Harrisville. Via Route 89, the 4.6-mile drive south to Ogden takes about 10 minutes, depending on traffic. Salt Lake City is a little more than 43 miles south, a drive that takes about 40 minutes via Interstate 15, which runs by the west side of town. Locals don’t need to venture far to hit the slopes at the ski resorts in the Wasatch Mountains. The closest of the nearly 20 resorts, Nordic Valley, is less than 14 miles east. The drive typically takes less than 30 minutes.
