Diverse outdoor recreation in the surrounding forest areas
Along the neighborhood's west edge is the 8-mile-long Barkhamsted Reservoir, Connecticut's largest drinking water reservoir. Featured is the Saville Dam, one of the most photographed destinations in the area, with stone turrets rising from the reservoir that are reminiscent of a medieval castle. The area surrounding the dam serves as a popular place for running, with a wide shoulder and stone walkway. There's a 3.8-mile out-and-back route that starts at the dam and follows Seville Dam Road. Within Hartland is the gorgeous Tunxis State Forest, which spans approximately 9,152 acres. Large stretches of unbroken forest make up the area, where wildlife like moose and black bears live. Cross-country skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking and mountain biking are all popular outdoor activities that can be experienced in the state forest. The Falls Brook Trail winds through the forest and those who explore it will come across numerous waterfalls, cascades and pools along its shady path. Pockets of wildflowers along a brook reward those who trek the trail. Within Tunxis State Forest is the Tunxis Forest Ski Cabin, a historic ski lodge at the end of Balance Rock Road. The lodge was built in 1937 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Historic restaurant and vineyard anchor local dining scene
The Coach Stop was first built in the 1700s, the very first house built on the town green. Throughout the years, it has functioned as a residence, a stagecoach stop and inn, a coffee shop, a pizza parlor, an antique shop and a preschool. Since 1963, it has primarily served as a restaurant, first as Coach & Flour, then as Cugino's and then as the restaurant that runs to this day: The Coach Stop. Residents can enjoy hearty entrees like Potato-Crusted Salmon, Beer-Battered Fish and Chips or Chicken Francese. Meanwhile, wine connoisseurs flock to Lost Acres Vineyard, which dates back to the 1700s. The vineyard offers date night specials that include a bottle of wine, a pizza, a salad and a dessert. Locals needing some pampering can also sign up for Friday Unwind with Wine, Yoga and Massage. When residents need to stock up on groceries, they head to Geissler's Supermarket, about eight miles from the neighborhood.
Hartland residents need to travel to Granby or another town for groceries.
