Harwich Port offers seaside New England living

The Cape Cod neighborhood of Harwich Port sits on the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Harwich, which was settled more than 350 years ago. It offers a quintessential New England atmosphere complete with salty air off the ocean and classic Cape Cod homes. “There are antique houses, because we have some of the oldest incorporated places in the whole U.S. on the Cape,” says Shane Masaschi, a broker associate with Compass Real Estate in Chatham Village . “Our towns were founded in the 1600s. They’re old. The Mayflower landed in Provincetown on Cape Cod before Plymouth.” Over the centuries, the area has formed into a tight-knit community, one that comes out in droves for annual events. “We’re trying to encourage people to come where we live,” Masaschi says, “as well as shop there, live there and go to the restaurants.”

Waterfront properties are a staple of Harwich Port

As is traditional on Cape Cod, the Cape style of housing is the most popular architectural design in Harwich Port, though there are also ranch-style homes, cottages and colonial-style homes to be found. Single-family homes can typically cost anywhere from about $450,000 to almost $1.5 million. Larger, custom properties and waterfront homes can sell for $2 million or more. There are some condos in Harwich Port, which typically cost between $300,000 and $400,000. “Harwich Port is really sought-after,” Masaschi says. “ Harwich Port has a fair amount of waterfront in their village, and that’s why the real estate is the most expensive in Harwich.”

Education via the Monomoy Regional School District

Harwich Port is served by the Monomoy Regional School District, which earns an A-minus rating from Niche. Students can enroll at the B-rated Harwich Elementary School for kindergarten through fourth grade, while Monomoy Regional Middle School hosts grades five through seven and earns a B-plus. Monomoy Regional High School has a B and was recognized by the College Board for its collegiate preparation after the 2023-24 school year.

Sandy recreation along the Harwich Port coastline

One of Harwich Port’s primary draws, especially in the summer, is its miles of beaches. Residents can head to the shore to sit on the public beaches or swim at spots like Sea Street Beach, Merkel Beach and Red River Beach. Red River Beach also has a launch for kayaks and canoes. Robert F. Smith Cold Brook Preserve spans 66 acres and offers two miles of trails. The Harwich Mariners play summer college baseball at Whitehouse Field in Harwich Center. Saquatucket Municipal Marina is a full-service marina with 200 slips that can accommodate vessels up to 65 feet. “Saquatucket Harbor is a massive harbor,” Masaschi says. “You can also trailer boats in.”

Dining variety along Massachusetts Route 28

Most Harwich Port restaurants are along Route 28, though many are open only seasonally. “It has its own village and a different vibe,” Masaschi says. “When the restaurants open in Harwich Port, there are several where you can eat indoor or outdoor, which is really cool.” The Hot Stove Saloon is a baseball-inspired restaurant with pub classics, and 3 Monkeys serves sushi and cocktails across the street. Seagulls Sweets & Mochinut and Sundae School scoop ice cream for patrons, while The Lanyard Restaurant has live music shows and pub fare. Closer to the water, Cape Sea Grille serves seafood, as does Brax Landing Restaurant, which sits adjacent to Saquatucket Marina. Shaw’s is less than 3 miles from central Harwich Port. Target is under 15 miles west.

Traversing Cape Cod on state and national routes

Massachusetts Route 28 runs east-west through Harwich Port and through Cape Cod itself, and United States Route 6 is less than 5 miles north. Boston is more than 80 miles northwest. The Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority has bus stops along Route 28. Cape Cod Hospital is over 10 miles away. Air travelers can fly out of the Cape Cod Gateway Airport, around 15 miles west in Hyannis , or find more flight options at Boston Logan International Airport, nearly 90 miles away. The Freedom Cruise Line ferry operates seasonally and transports passengers between Harwich Port and Nantucket in just over an hour.

Community events are spread throughout Harwich

Seasonal festivals are part of the annual calendar in Harwich Port. Port Summer Nights – Wednesday Night Music is a weekly summer event in July and August. “Different bands spread out around Harwich Port and it draws people in,” Masaschi says. The Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival celebrates the local industry at the Harwich Community Center each September, and will mark its 50th anniversary in 2026. “Cranberry growing and harvesting is huge in Harwich Port,” Masaschi says. The event features food trucks, live music, crafts and more. The town celebrates the yuletide season with its annual Christmas Stroll in early December, which includes a tree-lighting ceremony, visits with Santa, live music and other holiday activities.
