Ravenna is a country community with modern perks
Densely wooded and surrounded by Minnesota farmlands, Ravenna is a rural neighborhood known for privacy and a rustic atmosphere. Hugged to the north and east by the Mississippi and Vermillion rivers, the area is prized by nature lovers and anglers. Low crime rates and access to highly ranked public schools draw retirees and families. Ravenna’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4. Homes have sprawling lots and modern amenities, mixing contemporary comfort with country living. “We’re in the country, but there are still lots of nice homes out here,” says Ravenna Township clerk Caroline Spurgeon. “But we’re not far from Hastings or even St. Paul.”
Multiple-acre lots are easy to find
The median lot size for Ravenna is just under 4 acres, giving locals a level of privacy not often found in suburban areas. Homes are supplemented with well-maintained pole barns and utility sheds, and luxuries like in-ground pools and oversized garages are also common. Ranch-style homes start in the mid-$300,000s and reach the low $600,000s, depending on acreage and amenities. Two-story farmhouse-style homes range from the low $500,000s to the mid-$800,000s.
Natural woodlands surround both rivers and golf courses
Though Ravenna has no public parks, much of the area is covered by the Mississippi River and the Vermillion River Watershed. In addition to being home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, visitors are fond of the area for its opportunities to fish, canoe and birdwatch. Six miles west, South Pines Park has a playground and basketball half-court, while Tuttle Park hosts Little League on its baseball field across the street. Hidden Greens Golf Course offers 18 holes on its public greens in the middle of a wilderness refuge. In addition to a practice facility and driving range, it organizes adult and junior leagues.
State championships at Hastings High School
Students can begin school at Kennedy Elementary School, which has an A-minus from Niche, before heading to Hastings Middle School, which has a B. Older students will enroll at Hastings High School, which has an A-minus and has won dozens of state championships for their marching band and sports teams.
Shopping and laid-back restaurants are in nearby Hastings
Ravenna is almost entirely homes and farms, so most shopping is done in Hastings, 7 miles northwest. Hastings Marketplace and Westview Center are adjacent shopping hubs, offering familiar stores and restaurants like Walmart Supercenter, Ace Hardware and Culver’s. The Busted Nut Bar and Grill offers classic tavern fare and free peanuts in a colorful atmosphere. Established in 2014, the Lock and Dam Eatery is a local institution that combines Mexican, Italian and Midwestern flavors just off the Mississippi River.
Live entertainment at Rivertown Days and the Antique Power Show
The Little Log House Antique Power Show has been held in a restored pioneer village since 1991. In addition to historical reenactments and demonstrations, visitors can attend a tractor pull, listen to live rock and polka bands or admire the blooms in the perennial garden. Rivertown Days turns downtown Hastings into a block party every July, featuring carnival rides, food tents and over 20 live bands.
Straightforward routes to Hastings and the Twin Cities
The nearest highway is U.S. Route 61, which provides a direct route to Hastings. St. Paul and Minneapolis are 25 and 40 miles northwest, respectively. Public transit and sidewalks aren’t available, so locals rely on their cars for most transportation.
Important to know
With the Mississippi River and Vermillion River Watershed taking up a third of the township, flooding has been an issue for residents. This includes flash floods in 2024 that left basements and outdoor trails flooded. Many homes may require flooding insurance.

The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
