Rebuilding after a natural disaster
In 2017, a major tornado ripped through Hattiesburg and nearby areas, destroying many buildings and nearly devastating several communities, including East Jerusalem. Redevelopment began within the year, with the city and local groups making significant efforts. The nonprofit Twin Forks Rising played a major role in rebuilding East Jerusalem and much of the city's Ward 2. Some residents were awarded grants for home repairs through assistance programs. The neighborhood's western side is primarily residential, with a few businesses. A large water treatment facility is situated to the east. "This is an old neighborhood in Hattiesburg adjacent to the downtown commercial business district," says Allison Neville, a Hattiesburg resident. Allison says many locals are looking to move closer to downtown in recent years, partly due to significant revitalization in surrounding historic communities.
Buying into East Jerusalem
Homes sell for comparatively less than in other downtown communities. East Jerusalem contains ranch-styles and cottages with two or three bedrooms dating back to the 20th century, some over 100 years old. Many houses offer wideset front porches and lifted foundations to accommodate potential flooding. Homes entering the market range from fixer-uppers needing repair to partial and complete remodels. Houses needing significant repair can cost between $20,000 and $50,000, while partial or fully remodeled homes range from $60,000 to $120,000.
Getting around on The Hub City Transit and local highways
The community includes several houses of worship, such as East Jerusalem Baptist Church and Morning Star Baptist Church. The Hub City Transit's orange line runs throughout the community, offering bus rides from downtown to Midtown Hattiesburg. The Hattiesburg Station provides Amtrak services at the restored train depot in the city's historic district, less than a mile away. Hardy Street turns into Main Street, which goes through the small city of Petal, less than 3 miles east. Forrest General Hospital and Interstate 59 are about 5 miles from the community.
Near top schools, Woodley Elementary and Sacred Heart Catholic School
Woodley Elementary has a B grade from Niche and is considered among the top elementary schools in Forrest County. Sixth graders attend Hattiesburg STEAM Academy, which neighbors N.R. Burger Middle. Hattiesburg High offers CTE courses and a middle college program. The middle and high schools have C-plus grades from Niche. Parents may also choose private options, such as Central Baptist School or the highly-rated Sacred Heart Catholic School, one of the top private schools in the state.
Southern Seafood and Sullivan's Grocery
Local businesses within the community include Southern Seafood Market and Deli, a restaurant that doubles as a seafood market, and Sullivan's Grocery on Old Highway 49. As a downtown community, residents are less than a mile from popular establishments like Southern Prohibition Brewing and the Lucky Rabbit thrift store. Traveling west on Hardy Street leads to the city's Avenues shopping and entertainment district.
Visiting the lake and Friendship Park
To the south awaits Duncan Lake Park, which has a 17-acre lake for fishing and hiking. The water is stocked with catfish and bass, but locals say the fish can be elusive. In 2021, the city added a trail extension to allow for longer walks around the lake. Eastside Park, also known as Friendship Park, has a baseball field for local athletic leagues. The grounds also include a basketball court, a play area and a paved walking path.
Events in downtown Hattiesburg
Many city-wide gatherings are held nearby at Town Square Park, including the Hattiesburg Craft Beer Festival and the music event Live at Five. On Thursdays, the park is filled with vendors and shoppers for the Downtown Hattiesburg Farmers Market.
A stop on the Freedom Summer Trail
Morning Star Baptist Church is one of many stops along the Freedom Summer Trail, a driving tour that celebrates Hattiesburg's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
