Welcome to Grace Avenue-Northhills Drive, a neighborhood in Hattiesburg Mississippi.
A supportive community in Hattiesburg
The Grace Avenue-Northhills Drive community, in the northern part of Hattiesburg, sits on the outskirts of the University of Southern Mississippi. The area has pockets of undeveloped land between apartment complexes for college students, houses, manufacturers and auto service providers. A network of nonprofits and government-funded organizations support the neighborhood and surrounding area. One of these organizations is Habitat for Humanity of the Pine Belt. "The organization is volunteer-based," says Bree Hartfield, a Resource Development and Communications Director for the local nonprofit chapter. "We're a collection of people lending a helping hand to our community." U.S. 49, on the western edge, connects residents to the university and a commercial district along Hardy Street.
Houses from the 20th century and multifamily units
The neighborhood features brick ranch-style houses with paved walkways extending through the front yards—most dating from the 1960s to the 1980s. There are also duplexes and quadplexes; many are purchased by investors looking to rent a unit to college students and young professionals. The area contains several multifamily units, such as Mark 1 Apartments and North Hill Place Apartments. Houses don't come on the market often, but the most recent home was priced at around $125,000. Buyers can expect to pay between $175,000 and $225,000 for a multi-unit property. Hattiesburg and the surrounding region are prone to severe weather, including tornadoes and flooding, which may affect insurance premiums.
