A downtown community with dedicated residents
Hattiesburg Historic, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1980, features century-old homes near the city's central business district. Many of these properties were once prominent businesses and homes of Hattiesburg's political leaders. Today, the neighborhood is mostly residential. However, some buildings have been converted into bed-and-breakfasts and event spaces, including Ross Mansion or The Crawford House & Gardens. "I know every community says they are a close-knit community, but we really are friends with our neighbors," says Allison Neville, a neighborhood resident and former board member of the Historic Hattiesburg Neighborhood Association. "Each home was built between 1890 and the early 1900s. We really are in the trenches together because it's expensive to keep up these very old houses, but it is well worth it." Hattiesburg, nicknamed the Hub City, was an important center for the railroad and lumber industries. Hattiesburg Historic still has train tracks and an active Norfolk Southern railyard just north of the area. The historic neighborhood is just 3 miles from The University of Southern Mississippi, founded in 1910, and William Carey University, founded in 1892.
Scoring a historic gem in downtown
The area contains homes featuring architecture from the early 20th century, such as Victorians with bay windows and Colonial-inspired houses. There are also bungalows and American Foursquares on the residential streets. Homeowners hoping to renovate their historic gems must adhere to the Historic Conservation Ordinance and Hattiesburg Design Guidelines Manual, as well as receive approval from the Historic Conservation Commission. "There are mostly families who live here, but we also have students who rent," Neville says. "When a rental goes on the market, it doesn't last long because this is such a coveted neighborhood. People want to live downtown." Generally, homes needing repairs enter the market between $65,000 and $115,000. Move-in ready properties with upgrades often list between $175,000 and $375,000.
Enjoying time in Walthall or Town Square parks
Walthall Park, operated by the HHNA, is an outdoor space with an open field and tree shade. The onsite Walthall Building is available to rent for private events. On the other side of Gordons Creek awaits Town Square Park, a gathering spot for several downtown events. To the south rests the 17-acre Duncan Lake, a nearby recreational haven for fishing and hiking. The city added a trail extension for longer walks around the lake.
Supporting local businesses
Hattiesburg Historic has a few daycare centers and other locally owned businesses, including McElhaney Plumbing & Hardware Supply. The nearest supermarket, Sullivan's Grocery Store, is about a mile south. Shoppers will find discount retailers Dollar General and Family Dollar close by. Because there's virtually no dining within the community, most locals head towards downtown's business district for restaurants. GrateFull Soul has a rustic flair, displaying exposed wooden rafters and lighting fixtures made of galvanized tubs. At Southern Prohibition Brewing, patrons use a QR Code to order drinks and food.
Historic Hattiesburg Neighborhood Association
Hattiesburg Historic has two major gatherings that are long-time traditions. "Victorian Candlelight Christmas has luminaries, and it really is a beautiful event. It's been going on for over 40 years," Neville says. The Downtown Crawfish Jam Music Festival is a fundraiser that has run for 25 years. "We get a couple of thousand visitors," Neville says. "It's a full day of live music, unlimited crawfish and beer. The tickets are all-inclusive! But it's also a very family-friendly event with jump houses for kids."
Residents may see flooding in the area
A quarter of Hattiesburg residences are in a special flood hazard area. Several homes were elevated in renovations after tornados and subsequent floods in past years. A property's location within a floodplain can impact insurance premiums.
Some students attend schools in the community
Sacred Heart Catholic School is the only school in the community and serves kindergarteners to twelfth graders. According to Niche, it ranks among the top Catholic schools in Mississippi. Woodley Elementary has a B grade and is considered the No. 6 elementary school in the county. Sixth graders attend Hattiesburg STEAM Academy, next door to N.R. Burger Middle, which has a C-plus grade. Hattiesburg High, which also has a C-plus, offers CTE courses as well as a Middle College program that allows students to earn an associate degree.
Traveling around Mississippi's Hub City
Forrest General Hospital and Interstate 59 are about 5 miles away. Public bus stops are available on Bay Street, though most locals get around by car. To the north, there is also an Amtrak station at the renovated Hattiesburg Station platform. Pine Street, also known as Highway 11, reaches surrounding cities like Petal and Lumberton. As the Hub City, Hattiesburg is within 120 miles of the state's capital, New Orleans and Mobile.
