"You have colleges here, USM being the biggest, but Hattiesburg thrives without the college. It's a place where people come to relax and have an opportunity to take a load off." A part of the city's Midtown, the community is close to medical facilities, shopping, local businesses and the University of Southern Mississippi. The private Racquet Club of Hattiesburg sits in the southern corner, less than a mile from Interstate 59.

A suburb near Midtown Hattiesburg
The neighborhood is primarily residential, featuring ranch-style houses with midcentury modern and Colonial influences. There's also a handful of two-story homes available. Most Jamestown-Lincoln houses date from the 1960s to 1980s and have brick or concrete block exteriors. Several residences entering the market have modernized upgrades such as remodeled rooms and new roofs. Single-story ranch-style homes range in price from $200,000 to $300,000, while smaller homes can cost as low as $150,000. Hattiesburg High receives a B and provides a middle college program and over 10 career and technical education pathways. The University of Southern Mississippi is about 2 miles north. Forrest General Hospital and U.S. 49 are about 2 miles away. "Hattiesburg is the Hub City," Hartfield says. "We sit perfectly from everywhere: New Orleans, Jackson, Mobile and Meridian. We are a perfect median." Those cities are about 100 miles away from Hattiesburg.

Spending the day at Kamper Park
Kamper Park, 3 miles north, is a major landmark in the city. The park houses the Hattiesburg Zoo and the Serengeti Springs waterpark. Vernon Dahmer Park, also 3 miles away, offers youth athletic fields, a playground, and basketball and tennis courts. The outdoor space has been the site of the city's Juneteenth Celebration for over 40 years. The Racquet Club of Hattiesburg is a members-only tennis facility that hosts tournaments throughout the year.

But many will travel 3 miles north to the bustling business district along Hardy Street to visit local Midtown restaurants and shops like Keg and Barrel or The Midtowner. "It's like a local oasis," Hartfield says. "People here love to have the opportunity to support local restaurants and businesses. You get to shop with your neighbors and spend money while helping your community grow."
