A budding art scene surrounded by historic homes
North Main Historic, a neighborhood from the early 1900s, has a growing art scene in downtown Hattiesburg. During the midcentury, interest in downtown communities shifted to the city's outer regions. Today, residents and the local government are investing in the area. "People see this part of the city as a local place where creatives and cool kids live and want to hang out," says Tom S. Ramirez Boldo, President of The North Main Historic Neighborhood Association. "Right now, there's been a big resurgence of people wanting to live in this neighborhood and revitalize homes here." With nearby cultural centers and art gallery spaces, North Main Historic is quickly attracting artists and creatives. The neighborhood is home to several murals and includes the Hattiesburg Community Arts Center. The surrounding area also played a role in the state's involvement in the Civil Rights Movement, particularly during Freedom Summer, a major effort to promote voter registration in 1964.
North Main is known for its historic buildings, diverse shops, and cultural events.

Local businesses and an artistic flair downtown
North Historic Main contains a few modest corner stores for day-to-day items. Dining options are primarily concentrated along Hardy and Main Streets. "There are almost no national chain restaurants. It's all local," Boldo says. Royal Spices began as a food truck and eventually opened a brick-and-mortar in the community with the help of a local investor. The brewery Keg and Barrel serves over 120 hoppy beverages inside a building dating back to the 1800s. Heading down Highway 11 brings locals to a Walmart Supercenter and Cloverleaf Center shopping mall, about 3 miles south. The neighborhood is slowly earning a reputation as a creative downtown hub. "There are a bunch of art galleries at 4th Street and Main. Several new businesses are also at that corner," Boldo says, who also owns the gallery, Nuestro Arte. "The Creators Plaza is a building on that corner. It's full of artistic types."
The "We're in This Together" mural art trail features vibrant artwork celebrating community.

The community contains Craftsman styles, two-story homes with screened-in porches and houses transformed into duplexes. Remodeled homes over 1,250 square feet often list between $100,000 to $225,000, while smaller renovated spaces list for as low as $80,000.
