A growing community in West Hattiesburg
About 5 miles from West Hattiesburg is Oak Grove, a suburban haven with top-rated schools, popular Friday night football games and community engagement. "This is a protected community and people look out for each other," says Dominique Magee, an Oak Grove resident and South Mississippi Realtor with Epique Realty. "They just see a person in need, and they help. It's old-fashioned in that way. I enjoyed my pregnancy here because everyone was so nice to me." She mentions that Oak Grove benefits from homeowner associations and the Lamar County Police Department, which is actively involved in the community and frequently patrol the area. Residents are accustomed to yard sales and gathering at local churches on holidays. "Oak Grove is a more higher-end area in West Hattiesburg," Magee says. "Lamar County is an A district, so the schools are awesome. People also move here to retire." Oak Grove is an unincorporated community in Lamar County, and most homes have Hattiesburg mailing addresses.

Living away from the bustle of the city
Locals greet each other along Oak Grove's residential streets while enjoying time outside. "People walk, jog and ride their ATV and golf carts in the community," Magee says. "The landscaping is great, and outdoor life is always going to be a big deal." The area has a mix of ranch-style from the second half of the 20th century and more recent homes featuring new traditional styles. Common exteriors include brick veneers or board and batten siding. The Legacy development has a nostalgic feel with white picket fences and a central town hall building. More recent homes feature new traditional styles. Typically, 20th-century ranch-styles list between $200,000 and $340,000, while custom builds from the 1990s to 2010s can cost between $245,000 and $340,000. Homes built over the last five years generally enter the market from $300,000 to $375,000. As a part of a tornado-prone region, Oak Grove has a moderate risk of flooding and wind damage, which can impact insurance rates.
