A Midtown Hattiesburg community next to USM
An EF-4 tornado developed in neighboring Lamar County on the afternoon of February 10, 2013, ripping through Hattiesburg and Petal, killing four people along its nearly 22-mile path of devastation. University Heights in Midtown Hattiesburg was one of the communities ravaged by the tornado. In the wake of the tragedy, the city created The Midtown in Motion Master Plan, a major redevelopment effort to connect Forrest General Hospital to the university. University Heights has bounced back as a residential community next to the busy commercial district, Hardy Street. "It's a very popular walkable neighborhood that's in transition," says Paul Andrews, a Hattiesburg native who lives nearby. "Me and my parents' generation make up about 50% with an influx of younger families with children." The university, with an enrollment of over 14,000 students, offers bachelor, graduate and doctoral programs.

"We have direct access to the Midtown area, which is full of restaurants, especially the Robert St. John restaurants," Andrews says. Robert St. John, a local restauranteur, has a collection of establishments along the business route. These include popular spots like Tabella Italian Restaurant and Ed's Burger Joint. Mahogany Bar, inside Crescent City Grill, is a well-visited college student hangout with patio seating and happy hour selections.
