Suburban feel with urban convenience, under a cover of green
Under leafy old-growth maples and elms, the community of Haverford is a popular neighborhood on the Main Line of suburban Philadelphia. “It’s got a great suburban feel to it, plenty of streets lined with trees,” says Commissioner Judy Trombetta, Haverford Township Commissioner for the 4th Ward, “We wanted a place with parks and playgrounds, close enough to enjoy the city but to be just outside of it.” Haverford checks all these boxes and more, providing clusters of local commercial and dining spots, unique amenities, highly rated schools, and a notably low crime score on the CAP Index, half the national score. It’s more than just houses and amenities, as Trombetta notes – “Our community is supportive of each other and very engaged.”

From condos to Main Line mansions
With immaculate landscaping and leafy canopy throughout the neighborhood, the single-family homes and condos of Haverford get a level of privacy and tranquility that is rare to find so close to a major city. Most single-family properties come with yards protected by hedgerows and tree stands, says Trombetta, “Lots of homes haze decent sized yards, and even if you don’t there are always playgrounds and trails nearby.” Modern condos at Athertyn and neo-Traditional semi-detached homes as Haverford Reserve generally sell within the $900,000 to $1.4 million range. Single family homes fall across a wider range, with midcentury Colonial revivals and older cape cods fetching from $750,000 to $1.25 million. European-influenced and French Colonial estates can get from $1.3 to $2 million, while unique manor estates often offering 9,000 square feet of living space and up, along with ensuite bathrooms, formal dining rooms, and the latest in Smart and energy-efficient electronics can sometimes break through the $4 million mark.

Haverford schools get high grades
“Haverford Township School District continues to rank really high on performance,” says Trombetta, whose child attends school in the district. In fact, Niche rates it as one of the Top 30 school districts in the state. Haverford students will start off in Coopertown Elementary School, before moving on to Haverford Middle School and Haverford Senior High, all of which get an A grade from Niche. Haverford High School is home to WHHS, the oldest high school-run radio in the country, which was founded in 1949. Haverford College is located in the community as well, a liberal arts college that counts numerous Nobel and Pulitzer winners among its graduates. Students there integrate well into the community, Trombetta points out - “Haverford college students are often engaged with the community, they’ll often volunteer at tree planting events or other activities, they’re civic minded and they participate in the community.”

Extensive park options, from top tier golf to hiking and more
Haverford Township itself has over 30 parks, Trombetta mentions, and many of them are within the Haverford neighborhood. Adjacent to Coopertown Elementary, Highland Farm Park has green space including two ball fields, a basketball court and a tennis court. The largest in the area, Haverford Reserve features miles of wide walking paths through the reserve, along with grass and synthetic fields, the Freedom Playground, a disc golf course and a dog park for four-legged friends. Golfers will love the neighborhood as well, with Merion Golf Club’s two courses. It’s not just an attraction for PGA tour events and golfers popping in and out for a round, Trombetta says, “They are community partners and open up for activities for local residents to enjoy.”

Retail and dining centered on major routes
“I couldn’t just name one,” says Trombetta when asked about a favorite spot for a bite, “there are so many diverse options.” There are no places right in the Haverford neighborhood proper – instead, residents will head out to shops clustered in shopping centers and along the main streets around the community. Haverford Square, next to the community's train station, is home to the White Dog Café where residents can unwind with refreshments on the restaurant's sidewalk patio or inside the fancy, dog-themed dining room with mounted canine busts. Local craft beer chain Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant has an outpost next to Haverford College, while Trombetta points to the strip along Darby Road as a great stop for everything from breakfast at the Havertown Grille, to coffee at the House Cup Café, to a date night at Brick and Brew Havertown. North on Lincoln Highway, Acme provides day-to-day necessities and local and national retailers have store fronts.

High-speed commute to the city
“When we were looking, we were looking for an area with good transportation to the city,” says Trombetta, as her husband worked there at the time. The Norristown High Speed Line runs right through the neighborhood and has multiple convenient stops, terminating in Philadelphia where riders can switch over to SEPTA buses and trains, while SEPTA runs regular service lines accessible at the nearby Haverford station. The neighborhood offers great biking and walking recreationally, but for the most part, residents rely on their cars. Philadelphia International Airport is 16 miles south and is also accessible via public transportation. Bryn Mawr Hospital, at the furthest point in the neighborhood only two miles away, provides 24-hour emergency care for the region.
Community get-togethers all year round
“It’s a tight-knit community, we have local civic associations centered around the individual parks that host all these little events throughout the year like Easter Egg hunts,” says Trombetta. “Movie night in the parks brings kids and parents together in a great informal setting.” From Discover Haverford’s holiday festival with ice carving and a tree lighting, to the HaverFood food truck festival, to the annual Haverford Township Day parade in October, the neighborhood regularly comes together to celebrate.
Cracking on at the CREC
The Haverford Community Recreation and Environmental Center, affectionately referred to as The CREC – pronounced creck – is the heart of neighborhood programming. “The CREC is a place where people connect, not just outdoor and fitness, but where people hold events and weddings,” says Trombetta. “The township has a lot of programming for families and children there.” It’s a concerted effort by the township to bring together residents for health and wellness, not just physical but social and educational.
