East Broadway
Residential homes along East Broadway
Sitting on winding country roads, single-family homes in East Broadway were primarily built in the latter half of the 1900s. These residential properties, many of which are tucked behind dense and mature trees, are often spread apart and have spacious yards. The median lot size is around 1.5 acres. Common architectural styles include Cape Cods, Colonial Revivals, bi-levels and traditional homes with gabled roofs. While the average home size is around 1,500 to 2,500 square feet and usually lists between $600,000 to $1 million, sprawling waterfront properties with private boat docks may list up to $1.5 million. “There’s a handful of homes along the river that are really exquisite,” says Stacey Caruso, a local Realtor at Coldwell Banker Realty with 13 years of experience. ”We have some million-dollar homes there, which is not typical for Haverhill.” Homeowners who have properties in flood zones may be required to purchase flood insurance.Popular outdoor space by the Merrimack River
The Meadow Brook Conservation Area has some trails, and the Renaissance Golf Club sits at the southern tip of the community. Located by the Merrimack River, the 50-acre Riverside Park is near the southern tip of the community and includes a stadium, sports fields, a playground, fenced-in dog parks and walking paths. About several miles west, Winnekenni Park features over 700 acres of conservation land, 10 miles of trails, which include the Dudley Porter Trail, and the Plug Pond for swimming, fishing and boating. Farther west, Swasey Field is a hotspot with a spray park and basketball courts.Shopping and dining around downtown Haverhill
Many people go to Haverhill’s downtown area for shopping and dining. “This is a huge foodie town with a vibrant restaurant scene,” Eberhardt says. Popular restaurants include Butch's Uptown, a family-run eatery known for its steak and pasta entrees. The Peddler’s Daughter is an Irish pub with patio seating and live music. For riverfront dining, BOSA, a newcomer to town, opened earlier this year and is housed in The Heights Building. Offering views of the Merrimack River, this concept restaurant serves founder Sal’s signature pizza and seafood dishes in coastal Italian style. Sitting between Renaissance Golf Club and Riverside Park, Azul serves classic Mexican fare with margaritas and patio seating. Family-operated since 1820, Kimball Farm practices sustainable farming techniques and sells grass-fed beef, pork and eggs to locals. Market Basket is at Rivers Edge Plaza, and Target, which is still in town, is about 7 miles away.Haverhill Public Schools
Students may begin their education at Golden Hill Elementary School, which has a C-plus Niche grade. Nettle Middle School has a C rating, and Haverhill High School scores a B-minus. Haverhill High has a STEM academy, a classical academy focusing on the study of Latin, honors and AP courses and a semester-long internship program made possible by numerous partnerships with local businesses, hospitals and the city council.Navigating into Boston
While the community is primarily car-dependent, there is an amtrak and a commuter rail station in Haverhill. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Haverhill Line takes commuters directly to Boston’s city center, and the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority has bus stops throughout Haverhill for access across Northeast Massachusetts. However, the current MBTA station is under construction until 2025, and people can either take the Amtrak or take the shuttle to Bradford for the commuter rail to access the capital city. Interstate 495 runs through Haverhill for easy highway access, while Boston Logan International Airport and downtown Boston are about 35 and 40 miles away, respectively, via Interstate 95. East Broadway has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4. The Holy Family Hospital – Haverhill is about 2 miles south.Events in Haverhill
One of the biggest annual festivals in the city is the River Ruckus, which features a band lineup, a car show, a kids’ zone with games and activities, as well as local food and fireworks by the river. CiderFeast is a summer celebration over New England ciders, and additional events include the Vintage Bazaar New England, a Santa parade and the Festival of Trees.
