Hawthorne has a hometown feel
Whether or not Hawthorne's name pays homage to a thorny bush of the same name or Nathaniel Hawthorne, the New England novelist who penned "The Scarlet Letter," residents of this small town love their community. Many people who move into this Passaic County borough never leave, creating generations of residents. Hawthorne's small-town feel shines through its walkability. Take a stroll to the movie theater, library and mom-and-pop businesses.

Colonial Revivals and Cape Cods
You will find a mix of housing in Hawthorne. Most of the houses here are early 20th-century homes, including Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and multi-family dwellings. There are also newer constructed properties on spacious lots, some with views of the Manhattan skyline. "Hawthorne's prices are more affordable in comparison to some of the surrounding towns, especially those in neighboring Bergen County," says Frances Rosado, a licensed broker and the team lead of The Frances Rosado Team at Real Broker LLC. Homebuyers can find smaller homes, such as Cape Cods and ranch styles in the $400,000s, while homes with a little more space fall between $500,000 and $600,000. Properties in the hills, which have larger lots, cost somewhere in the $700,000s. Hawthorne is also home to some townhome communities.

Main Street has shopping and dining
Adding to its small-town charm, Hawthorne has no popular chains like McDonald's and Starbucks, more independent than chain drugstores and no supermarket. For groceries residents can take a short drive to Whole Foods, Kings Food Market and an Acme. "Hawthorne is a smaller community with a Main Street with all kinds of little shops," Rosado says. Hawthorne is truly a mom-and-pop type of place. There are several bakeries, bagel shops, a diner and plenty of eateries and bars. The Front Porch Pub, a local watering hole, that, you guessed it, has a front porch, serves Asian fusion dishes with seasonal beers and cocktails. Justin's Ristorante is a beloved authentic Italian place where you bring your own alcohol.
