Suburban Neighborhood in Virginia
Fairfax County 22315
Hayfield might look like a typical Washington suburb, but the neighborhood’s unique history is right in the name. Once a hay field used by none other than George Washington, the area is now a connected community that hums with a sense of unity. Similar to a small town, the neighborhood is the root of many memories for those in the surrounding area. Brian Blackburn of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty has his own connections to the community and its secondary school. “My dad actually taught there when the school opened,” Blackburn explains.
Neighboring Fort Belvoir and less than 20 miles from Washington, Hayfield is home to over 3,600 people and over 1,400 homes. Find single-family homes with ranch-, split foyer-, colonial- and traditional-style architecture sprinkled through the neighborhood’s many subdivisions, as well as town houses with vibrant doors, mansard roofs and brick exteriors. While pools accompany some backyards, lakeside views complement others. Home values in Hayfield trend below the average for Fairfax County, an additional draw for many homebuyers. Town houses typically range from $475,000 to $685,000. Single-family homes between 1,500 and 2,000 square feet cost between $619,000 and $710,000, while larger homes reach up to $970,000.
Just as architecture varies across subdivisions, amenities do as well. Homes in the Lake d’Evereux community connect to walking paths along the waterside, while homes in Carrington Estates include larger property sizes and carefully landscaped lots. No matter which community you live in, however, there are opportunities to access amenities close to home. Climb through the tunnels at the Hayfield Community Park playground or purchase partial ownership of a private swim spot nearby by joining the Hayfield Farm Swim Club. To embrace the woodlands behind Lake d’Evereux, wander along the observation platforms overlooking Barnyard Run, less than 2 miles away.
A self-sufficient neighborhood, Hayfield contains its own schools, each aptly named after the community. Students attend Hayfield Elementary and Hayfield Secondary School, both graded B+ by Niche. While many neighborhoods feature separate middle and high schools, things are different in Hayfield. Students from seventh through twelfth grade learn under the same roof. Middle schoolers can participate in creating the Accipiter yearbook and H2N student magazine, while students at the high school level can participate in Advanced Placement courses and the Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp. When classes dismiss, the neighborhood comes together to support student-athletes. “Their basketball team just won the state championship, and there’s great community involvement,” Blackburn says. While life gets busy, the people of Hayfield have been making time to cheer on the Hawks since 1968.
In your free time, stop by the restaurants and stores in the Hayfield Shopping Center. When stomachs are rumbling after the big game, order orange beef at House of Dynasty, a restaurant that’s served as a staple in the community for decades. On the weekend, break a sweat at Planet Fitness or stumble across vintage finds at Goodwill. While there are multiple retailers to choose from, you won’t find the best selection of groceries within walking distance. Better options for grocery shopping are 2 miles away at the Kingstowne Towne Center, which includes multiple grocery stores, including Safeway.
To commute into the city, take advantage of the Franconia-Springfield metro station 3 miles away or jump onto Interstate 95 for a straight shot into the city limits. To bundle your love of a small town and your need for an easy commute, find a place to call your own in Hayfield.
