Secluded neighborhood features woodsy trails and hillside views
At the foot of the East Bay Hills, Hayward Boulevard begins an ascent past the East Bay campus of California State University, known as Cal State East Bay, and climbs into the Hayward Highland neighborhood. Clusters of apartment buildings give way to homes on generous tree-studded lots, ending at Stonebrae Country Club. Vantage points along the way provide views down into Maple Canyon or further out to Coyote Hills and the San Mateo Bridge over the San Francisco Bay. “There are a ton of trails, and there’s J.A. Lewis Park up toward the top. People go there just for the views,” says Kerissa Calvo, a top-performing Realtor with Fohl Realty & Investments, who has worked in the Hayward Highland area for ten years. “The area as a whole is very desirable.” Another draw is that Hayward Highland has a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Updated older homes and spacious newer homes with views
“It’s quiet and more secluded,” says local Realtor Cristina Bales, president and lead agent at Fohl Realty and Investments who has lived in Hayward since she was two years old and worked in real estate for 19 years. “There are both one-story and two-story, generously sized homes there.” Hayward Highland includes ranch-style homes, two-story traditionals and rambling Spanish-inspired estates. “A lot of families have lived in these homes since they were built and now are slowly moving out of them,” says Calvo. “We definitely have a lot of investors who have purchased and flipped them, so there are more updated homes as well. Maybe 65 to 70 percent are updated.” Some of the updates include bigger windows that take advantage of the views, high-end finishes like quartz countertops, and updated landscaping. New development in the 2000s brought multi-level homes with Spanish-influenced architecture. The average home value is $1.4 million. Fixer-uppers and older homes range from about $750,000 to $1.5 million, while those with extensive updates range from about $1.3 million to $2 million. Large newer homes in gated communities near the Stonebrae Country Club range from $1.8 million to $2.6 million.

Been here my whole life. It's a great environment. Only thing is Hayward leaders are poor at their position and compromise the people at the expense of their health.

There isn't much variety to the weather in the area. The weather is always warm, and there has been a drought for the past few years. There is rarely rain in the area, and when it does rain it is only for a short period of time and can't help with the drought.
