Quiet town, warm community

Hebron is a rural town known for the Hebron Harvest Fair, big lots of land, and a comfortable atmosphere. Home to about 10,000 people, it has a little downtown and its residential areas have grown steadily over the years, but it still has rustic charm. “I just love the community,” says Jim Celio, an associate broker at Century 21 AllPoints Realty who has lived in the area for 50 years and has been selling real estate there for just shy of that. “I’ve chosen to live here most of my life. I have an office in the center of town, and I get to look out at old historic buildings that have good memories for me. I’ve raised my family and my grandkids here.” With a history dating back to 1704, Hebron’s history is important to many locals. “There’s very structured measures to protect the history of the town, but it’s not a ‘pull the drawbridge up’ kind of thing,” Celio says. “New people are more than welcome in this community.”

Hiking and fishing at Gay City State Park

Burnt Hill Park provides athletic fields where local teams play baseball, soccer and lacrosse. Residents head to Holbrook Pond, one of several local bonds, to kayak or fish. They hike along the wide, well-maintained trails connecting the Raymond Brook Preserve and Kinney Road Open Space and through the miles of trails used for hiking, biking and horseback riding in the 1,500-acre Gay City State Park. Residents also head to the state park to fish, swim, camp and explore long-abandoned mill town ruins. Some residents join the Blackledge Country Club for access to its 36-hole public green.

Homes with trees, fields or water

Hebron’s residential communities are stretched along winding roads lined with trees and fields. Amston Lake is among its most popular, named for the 188-acre lake the community is built around. It’s one of the clearest lakes in Connecticut thanks to regulations that strictly prohibit gas-powered boats. Instead, homeowners enjoy sailboats, kayaks and canoes. Hebron’s mostly colonial-style homes, with a few Cape Cods and ranch-style houses, vary in price. Fixer-uppers go for as little as $200,000 and lakeside homes climb as high as $520,000. Most homes, however, fall closer to the $400,000 range, with the median price sitting at $404,250. According to Celio, buying a home here often comes with stiff competition. “Some people think you might be fibbing, but we have a population of 10,000 people, and as of this morning there are five properties in MLS,” Celio says.

Art at RHAM High School

The Hebron School District has a B-plus on Niche. Children attend Gilead Hill School, which has a B-minus, from pre-K through second grade before moving to Hebron Elementary School, which has a B-plus. They then shift to Regional School District No. 8, which Niche gives an A and rates as the best district in Tolland County. They attend RHAM Middle School, which has a B-plus, and RHAM High School, which has an A. RHAM High has its own chapter of the National Art Society, a community service program for the artistically minded that has chapters around the world.

Easy routes to Hartford

"Hebron is for people who want to get away from the city but don’t want to be totally away from it," says Vinnie Diana, a Realtor with William Raveis Real Estate. Located just 24 miles from Hartford, Celio also notes that the town is located between the city and the shoreline. Route 85, Route 66, which is also known as Main Street, and Route 316 cut through the center of town, making it easy to reach practically anywhere.

Hebron Harvest Fair, summer concerts

The Hebron Harvest Fair is one of the largest events of its kind in Connecticut. Every fall, the festival features monster truck pulls, cows, amusement park rides and horses. "The Hebron Harvest Fair is a big draw in the community," Diana says. "People from all over come to visit." Other events bring the community together throughout the year, too. “During the summertime every Friday night we have a concern with different varieties of music,” Celio says. “There are a series of craft fairs that are run in the center of town, too.”

Ted’s Foods, casual local eats

“You can’t buy a pair of shoes in Hebron, but you’ve got doctors, dentists, a community-sized grocery store,” Celio says, adding that Ted’s Foods, where most locals get their groceries, has been owned by a local family for over 50 years. “There’s just one or two of every major service that you need.” Residents head to Flour Girl Café for lattes and baked goods, pick up pizza from Wicked Slice and sit down for a casual meal at Gina Marie’s Family Restaurant. If they want to treat themselves for a fine dining experience or go shopping for anything other than groceries, though, residents need to drive 7 miles to Colchester or head into Hartford.
