Convenient Helena suburb

North Central is a Helena suburb that’s close to the highway, shopping centers and a golf course. “You’d move there for the shopping. There’s a plethora of things to do out there,” says Laurie Koutnik, a Broker/owner with Capital City Realty. The neighborhood is known for its convenience, whether it’s to stores and restaurants, or the trails around Mount Helena. “The trails are all over,” says Koutnik.”

Subdivisions, sidewalks and mobile homes

North Central’s streets are laid out in a grid, with a few cul-de-sacs and dead ends mixed into the lush streetscape of neatly trimmed lawns and clean sidewalks. Houses closer to the Bill Roberts Golf Course tend to go for between $600,000 and $900,000. Townhomes with tidy lawns sell at the lower end of this price range, and shingle-roofed cottages and shed-roofed modern-style homes sit at the top, mostly in the Cloverview Estates subdivision that overlooks the golf course. Houses that sell around the median price tend to be ranch homes, split-levels and brick bungalows. There is also a subdivision in the northernmost part of the neighborhood with suburban-style homes that have a variety of stylistic elements, often mixing craftsmen, colonial and ranch styles together, where houses sell for between $400,000 to $550,000. There is also a mobile home park in North Central, where units tend to sell for between $80,000 and $120,000.

From the driving range to the mountaintop

Golfers couldn’t pick a more convenient neighborhood than North Central. The Bill Roberts Golf Course is within walking distance from many homes in the neighborhood, and Cloverview Estate residents practically live on the course. If the driving range feels too tame, Mount Helena is about two miles away. The trails climb up the mountainside and lead to the peak and Devil’s Kitchen, a cave entrance of blackened, scorched-looking rock along the popular 1906 trail.

A mix of old charm and new convenience

Residents are close to shopping centers off Interstate 15, mostly full of big box stores like Target, Lowe’s and Costco. “You have that built-up feel around the north end,” says Koutnik. One of the benefits of living in this area is the easy access to these national retailers. For local flavor, Last Chance Gulch is a popular dining area in Helena that's about five miles from North Central. “Last Chance Gulch has that old-school charm,” says Koutnik. “It’s authentic, you’ve got all the old buildings that keep the history going.” The restaurants and shops are set up inside historic buildings built along a gulch where Helena's gold was first discovered in 1864. Firetower Coffee is popular for an early morning cup of coffee or an afternoon lunch, and Windbag Saloon serves burgers and microbrews out of a historic 1882 Italianate building. The Montana Book company is a favorite of bookworms looking for their next read, and Cobblestone Clothing sells contemporary women’s clothing.
