Eclectic homes close to trailheads, stores and restaurants
South Central, in Helena, is a little different, from the houses and location to the community spirit. “It’s pretty eclectic,” says Maria Demaray, a broker with Big Sky Brokers who’s sold homes in Helena. “There's a mix of older Victorians and cottages or bungalows, and it’s got tighter spaces so you have a very communal vibe. It’s also very centralized in Helena.” Many houses in the neighborhood are next door to Last Chance Gulch, Helena’s popular shopping and dining district. Mount Helena and Mount Ascension are also close by—both have trailheads within two miles of the neighborhood. “A lot of people choose to live there because it's close to the trail system," says Demaray. "It’s close to the outdoors and getting downtown. You're very immersed in Helena and all that it offers.” The neighborhood is also next to the state capitol complex, which is an employment center in the city.

Up the block from Last Chance Gulch
Located next door to many homes in South Central, Last Chance Gulch is the city’s premiere dining district. It’s named for the moment in 1864 when prospectors discovered gold, and Helena’s history began. The area consistently mixes new and old with eateries like On Broadway, an Italian restaurant that’s been a Helena Staple for 45 years, and The Union, a steakhouse. "The Union is a wood-fire steak butcher shop, it's farm-to-table, all local products,” says Demaray. There are also places to shop and find entertainment in Last Chance Gulch, like Funky Trunk Consignment Shop, Montana Book Company and Cinemark Helena. For groceries, most head to Safeway, about a mile from the neighborhood, or Costco, about three miles from the neighborhood.
The Union Market has fresh locally sourced meats for residents to enjoy.
