Last Chance Gulch offers plenty of shopping
Three miles from the neighborhood is Downtown Helena, also called Last Chance Gulch, which is a walkable mall lined with restaurants, breweries and shops. ”We have several breweries that are outstanding, like the Lewis and Clark Taproom,” says Garcia. On Broadway, an Italian restaurant has been a Helena staple for 45 years, and Gold Bar serves acclaimed burgers. “They probably have the best burgers in town,” says Laurie Koutnik, a Broker/owner with Capital City Realty. Shopping and entertainment are also available at Last Chance Gulch, whether book shopping at Montana Book Company, looking for new bike tires at Great Divide Cyclery, or going to the movies at Cinemark Helena. Most people do their grocery shopping at Walmart Supercenter, located just across Highway 287.

The Missouri River to east, Mount Helena and South Hills close by
Helena is known for its access to wilderness and outdoor recreation. “In Helena, we’ve got a unique opportunity that not a lot of cities in Montana offer,” says Garcia. “We’ve got a diverse selection of lakes, and the Missouri River flows through here,” says Nick Garcia, a Realtor with Bill Bahny and Associates and Helena resident. Mount Helena’s hiking trails are two miles to the west of South East Helena, and the Missouri River is 15 miles to the east. Hauser and Canyon Ferry Lakes are along the river and offer accessible fishing and boating spots. Plus, South Hills offers more hiking and biking trails.

The area is served by Helena Public Schools, which has a B rating on Niche. Smith Elementary School has a B-plus rating. Helena Middle School and Helena High School both have B ratings, and Helena High School has a variety of after-school activities, like choir, chess and ukulele clubs.
Live music over the summer
Helena is packed with events over the summer, with musical outings like Alive at Five, a concert series from June to August, and Live on the Gulch, a music and dance event on Saturdays in May. “People bring out their folding chairs and enjoy the walking mall during Live on the Gulch,” says Garcia. The Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds, about five miles from South East Helena, hosts concerts, monster truck rallies and gun shows. The Last Chance Stampede, a rodeo, is also held at the fairgrounds in July.
