Helena Valley West Central offers a rustic setting in a convenient location
In Helena Valley West Central, far-reaching properties on multiple acres are just a handful of miles from thoroughfares packed with restaurants and big-box stores. It’s a best-of-both-worlds dichotomy that comes with this community’s location on the outskirts of Helena, Montana’s capital. The area can offer privacy, yet things to do are always within reach. “You’re in the country, but very close to town. So it’s very convenient,” says Realtor Jane Andriolo of Lincoln Real Estate, who sells in the area.
Suburban subdivisions and rural expanses characterize the area
Buyers can find some of the area’s largest properties, some more than 10 acres, in the middle and western portions of Helena Valley West Central. Many are horse properties, and some have stables or barns. Ranch-style houses are common on these estates, and they sell for $550,000 to $1.2 million, depending on factors like age and square footage. Eastern sections of Helena Valley West Central feature suburban-style developments, where homes come closer together on lots less than an acre. This mix of ranch- and colonial-style homes have prices from $340,000 to $925,000.
Sports are a big deal at C.R. Anderson Middle and Capital High
The Helena Public Schools system has a B grade on Niche. The elementary schools that students around Helena Valley West Central attend vary quite a bit based on where they live, but the B-minus-rated Rossiter is one option. Special events at Rossiter Elementary include movie nights for students and their families. Students across Helena Valley West Central can progress into the B-plus-rated C.R. Anderson Middle, which counts cross-country, track, wrestling, girls volleyball, and boys and girls basketball teams among its extracurricular activities. Capital High holds a B rating on Niche. The Bruins’ football team has won 13 state titles, most recently in 2024.
Interstate 15 is part of the area's landscape
A scenic stretch of Interstate 15 runs just east of Helena Valley West Central’s homes. Residents can quickly hop on I-15 to get to places like Great Falls, Montana’s third-largest city, 90 miles away. It’s also a way to reach Helena’s St. Peter’s Health hospital, a 10-mile trip. Locals heading out of town have the Helena Regional Airport in their backyards, which services roughly 200,000 passengers a year and offers flights through Delta, United and Alaska Airlines.
Montana and Custer avenues feature shopping and dining
The nearby Montana and Custer avenues have a wide variety of places to eat, big-box retailers and other businesses. Stores in the area range from Target to Lowe’s to Costco and grocery chains. Copperline Smashburger is one of the popular local restaurants here, known in part for its poutine, a well-loved Canadian dish consisting of fries covered in gravy and cheese curds. The huckleberry pancakes at nearby Steve’s Cafe are a hit.
Trails for hiking and horseback riding cover the area
Helena Valley West Central and the wider area are teeming with trails. “There’s all kinds of hiking,” Andriolo says. The Head Lane, Tumbleweed and Norris Road trailheads wind through the Scratchgravel Hills Recreation Area, providing views of an expanse with a 5,233-foot peak. The trails are open to equestrians, for those in the area who own horses. Residents are about 10 miles from Lake Helena, a popular place to fish for species like walleye. Helena Valley West Central is also roughly 20 miles from the Great Divide ski area. “Which is super nice,” Andriolo says. Great Divide is 1,500 acres and has a 7,330-foot-tall summit.
Local fairgrounds is a hub for area events
The 160-acre Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, just outside of Helena Valley West Central, hosts multiple events every month. The schedule ranges from the Jordan World Circus in April to the Last Chance Stampede & Fair in July. The Last Chance Stampede includes a rodeo and live music.
