A central location, scenic views and dinosaurs

With the College of Southern Nevada Henderson at its heart and the picturesque McCullough Range to the west, Highland Hills beckons newcomers with its proximity to amenities and natural beauty. “It’s close to campus, shopping and parks,” says Brian Horner of Real Estate One. “People come for its location and affordability.” While that may be what initially attracts people to the southern Las Vegas Valley suburb, locals know it’s the neighborhood’s unique community that truly sets it apart. Since 2006, retired English teacher Steve Springer has united the community and lured tourists and national attention with his yard full of extinct creatures. “I would say it’s a huge part of the neighborhood’s identity,” says Springer, who bought his Highland Hills home in 1988. Retiring in 2004, his idea to give back to the community with his “dinosaur house” has literally taken on a life of its own. “I missed my students so much that I wanted to do something for them,” he says. “I put in the dinosaurs in my whole front yard, and I started with three, and now it’s a full-fledged park.” Now a charitable foundation called the Shan-Gri-La Prehistoric Park, Springer’s home is filled with over 60 dinosaur species, a 4-D animated Tyrannosaurus rex, 4,000-pound tortoises and giant prehistoric spiders atop the roof and attracts over 40,000 people a year. “I’ve had several people tell me they bought their house here so their kids can be near this house.”

Southwestern-style homes and prehistoric property

Springer’s dinosaur digs aren’t the only eclectic property in Highland Hills. Less than a mile away is the “Double Pyramid House,” designed by architect Harry Wilson in 1981 after a trip to Egypt. And a mile away from that is magician Lance Burton’s $5 million 14,000-square foot medieval castle house set on a hill. “There are some unique places here,” says Springer. Jurassic giants, pyramid properties and castles aside, Highland Hills primarily consists of Southwestern-style tract homes, with a few townhouses sprinkled in. “We’re a bedroom community, so it’s more affordable,” says Springer. “It’s a little older; it was built in the late ‘70s, but most houses are kept up pretty well.” Most homes were built in the early 1990s and range from $329,000 to $750,000. Buyers can find three-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot properties on the lower end and five-bedroom, 4,000-square-foot Spanish-style two-story homes on the higher end. Extended driveways for parking RVs make it easy for residents to pick up and go. Mission Hills Estates and Pearl Creek subdivisions boast higher-end homes with properties built by Lennar, equipped with above-ground spas, foundations and resort-style backyards. Properties in the gated Boulder Creek subdivision, developed by Woodside Homes, can run into the upper $600s. This newer construction, which started in the early 2000s, offers spacious floor plans and roomy lots, plus appealing amenities like luxury kitchens and covered patios for enjoying the outdoors any time of day. Those looking for townhouses will find two-bedroom, two-bath options starting at $350,000 in the Horizon Trails community. Most Highland Hills homes offer multi-car garages, large pools and meticulously landscaped lawns shaded with fruit trees and towering palms. Wherever newcomers decide to settle, they’re treated to views of the surrounding craggy mountains and schools and parks within walking distance of their front doors.

Dinosaurs, parks and wild preserves

Taking the kids to visit the prehistoric pals at Shan-Gri-La Prehistoric Park is a favorite pastime for locals, of course. “It’s truly almost beyond words how much this place has supported it,” Springer says. “Tours are on the weekends, and it’s like a reunion all the time; I have kids that I taught who come, and now they bring their kids to see the dinosaurs.” Springer updates the park constantly with dinosaur eggs that contain prizes and a television that screens educational programs on dinosaurs. “Everything is always free, and it’s fun for all ages,” says Springer. “Adults love it, too. We do tours on the weekends, and sometimes there’s a line going down the block, but everybody here seems to love it.” Highland Hills also offers several other nearby parks that residents can easily reach like O’Callaghan Park. Bring tennis rackets for a friendly match or stroll on one of the paved trails. Kids will enjoy the playgrounds and ball fields here, while furry companions can run freely at the fenced dog park. Residents can also head to neighboring Paradise Hills to enjoy activities at Hidden Falls and McCullough Vista parks. Hikers and cyclists can easily reach the 48,000-acre Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area by hopping on the Amargosa Trailhead, which lies to the west. Here, explore the vast McCullough Wilderness, a network of rugged trails and scenic mountain views.

Close to shopping, dining and entertainment

Bordered by major highways and interstates, Highland Hills is a short drive to restaurants, shops and entertainment. “Stores, a recreation center and four other parks are right around us,” Springer says. “Schools are everywhere, and the college is right around the corner, so it’s near everything.” Grab groceries at Albertson’s off Horizon Drive and get other shopping done at College Plaza, Crossroads Center and Boulder Horizon Center, all located at nearby major intersections. Mom’s Kitchen opens early for breakfast burritos and pancakes, or stop in at lunch for burgers, nachos and other comfort classics. Coffee Class Horizon provides a caffeine fix, or grab pub fare, cold pints and play bar top games 24 hours a day at Putters Vegas. On the weekends, catch a baseball or softball game at Morse Stadium or Lied Sports Complex on the CSN Henderson campus. The Clark County Museum takes a deep dive into Southern Nevada's past, covering everything from gaming to railroads, Native American history and a ghost town.

Eclectic but tight-knit community

While a devoted dinosaur enthusiast community may not be the norm, Springer says Highland Hills welcomes newcomers with open arms. “It’s a diverse community,” Springer says. “People of all types live here, and I always say, when people live here, it’s going to feel right,” he says. “It’s peaceful and has a warmth that’s hard to describe.” Summer and Halloween are when the neighborhood comes alive. From the local church to different events at the local parks and Springer decking out his park to celebrate every holiday, there’s always something going on. “We get 6,000 people here on Halloween,” he says. “Kids can play a ring toss game, pick a prize from the table and play with dinosaurs. The park changes a lot.”
