A centrally-located East Bay neighborhood surrounded by conveniences
The tranquil Central neighborhood in Hercules puts the best features of this East Bay city withing an easy drive, walk or bike ride. The bayside downtown is less than a mile away up Sycamore Avenue, as are several parks and trails. Go the other direction down the same thoroughfare and restaurants and household goods are abundant at places like the Creekside Center shopping plaza. California State Route 4 begins at this community’s eastern edge, and this, along with bordering Interstate 80, “will take you anywhere you want to go in the bay area within 20 minutes,” says local Roxanne Adams, a Broker Associate with eXp Realty.

Strolling through the neighborhood and along the bayfront
Bayside Park, located at the heart of Central, is where neighbors come together for tree-shaded strolls or, to take their kids to play. Duck Pond Park borders the neighborhood and includes cycling and pedestrian trails that weave through neighboring subdivisions. However, the biggest draw is San Pablo Bay, less than a mile to the west. “Walk the parkway all the way to end and you’re at the shoreline,” Adams says. The 350-mile-long San Francisco Bay Trail runs along the water, and spaces like Bayfront Park, 1.5 miles from Central, are popular for hiking, picnicking and fishing.

Newer homes with competitive prices
“In San Francisco people buy million-dollar properties sight unseen and those are fixer uppers,” says Realtor Clarissa Cortez of Clarissa Cortez Group, who specializes in the bay area. Central Hercules is full of homes built from the 2000s to 2010s, and these properties tend to cost between $700,000 and $900,000, well below the San Francisco average home value of $1.3 million. Central’s residences feature a mixture of Colonial Revival, American Foursquare and Victorian influences, giving its streetscapes a vintage feel. Central’s roads tend to be shaded by dozens of colorful trees, while sidewalks connect this tightly packed development.

Downtown and dining are just around the corner
As its name may suggest, Central sits equidistant from downtown Hercules and the shopping at the Creekside Center. Downtown has a small selection of local businesses, including Powder Keg, a seafood restaurant serving up fish and chips and clam chowder near the bay. To the east are groceries and more eateries. “A lot of people walk down to Peet’s Coffee every day. Nothing feels far away here,” Adams says. A Safeway sits next to Peet’s Coffee. The Creekside Center includes a Home Depot and dining options like the Dragon Terrace Chinese restaurant. Central itself is home to Jumping Spoon, a Korean restaurant known for its kimchi pancakes and ramen.
