A northern Mississippi city with a lively, small-town feel
Hernando is a small town in DeSoto County, Mississippi. Considered a bedroom community of Memphis, this lively, diverse locality gives off a close-knit, neighborly vibe. In 2023, Hernando was named one of Mississippi’s top 10 places to live by HomeSnacks, an online data group. “When the town was founded in 1836, it was originally called Jefferson until city officials found out there already was a Mississippi town by that name. In 1837, officials renamed Hernando after the explorer, Hernando DeSoto. In 1541, he was the first European to set eyes on the Mississippi River. That happened right here,” says Richard Long, curator of the DeSoto County Museum in Hernando. For much of its history, Hernando was an agriculture-based economy. But by the end of the 20th century, as residents started leaving for higher-paying jobs afield, the town focused on developing a diverse workforce. It worked. Today, Hernando is home to working farms, manufacturing plants and corporate offices. The outskirts of Hernando are a patchwork of pastures, farm fields and woodlands.
An array of affordable homes
Housing prices in the area often range from about $150,000 for a starter home to around $800,000 for a large, recently built Craftsman on several acres with an in-ground pool. Hernando’s North Side Historic District has a diverse collection of home architecture styles including Greek Revivals, Craftsman and Colonial Revivals. Most homes sit on large lots with spacious front yards and private driveways. Homes in town and in newer subdivisions have sidewalks. Sidewalks line many of central Hernando's streets, and streets farther from the center tend not to have sidewalks.
