A satirical art installation lights up the night

High Falls residents live under the watchful eye of 13 gnomes that light up nightly in southeastern New York. The aptly-named Gnome Mountain has a mythical aura about it, a rocky, craggy formation that slopes upward as Route 213 extends further west into the neighborhood. Its highest point is populated by the gnomes standing nearly three feet tall at the intersection of 213 and Old NY-213, a tongue-in-cheek art installation by artist Sam Tufnell. Beaming colors including green, yellow and orange into the night sky, the baker’s dozen of gnomes add a whimsical air to High Falls, already a small and sparse region of the Kingston area. “It’s this cute little town,” says Patty Kowatch, an associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North. “If you blink, you’re going to miss it, but people love it.”

Eclectic shopping on Route 213

Restaurants in High Falls are located on or near Route 213. “It’s a cute little town,” Kowatch says. “High Falls has its own unique following. There’s a bunch of cute restaurants and some antique shops.” Among those restaurants is The Spy Social Eatery and Bar, situated in a farmhouse-style building in western High Falls, which features American dishes, wine and more. Wood-fired pizza is served hot out of the oven at Ollie’s Pizza, just east down the road. Boutique shoppers browse flower selections at Green Cottage, antiques at the Curious Cat and art at Wired Gallery. Groceries are stocked at a Hannaford just over 10 miles northeast in Kingston.

Local landmarks and recurring events

High Falls itself has Gnome Mountain, but a mountainous gnome sits about 8 miles southwest at Kelder’s Farm and is one of the world’s largest such sculptures. “There’s all the street festivals,” Kowatch says. “It’s almost like the small-town vibe of having all those activities for the locals and the tourists up there. People love this area. They’ll walk up and down Woodstock or Rosendale, or on a Saturday High Falls always has people through it.” At the High Falls Flea Market, customers shop for a variety of items every Sunday from April through October, while each year the High Falls Fair Day brings the community together for an event showcasing food, live music, games and even a relay race.

“You can be in High Falls, but you’re only 10 to 15 minutes from the Strand in Kingston, where there might be a big festival going on,” Kowatch says. “Or, you could take a cruise on the Rip Van Winkle, walk over the walkway bridge or visit the Mohonk Mountain House, which is huge.” The Rip Van Winkle is operated by Hudson River Cruises and takes passengers through the waters, while the Walkway Over the Hudson spans nearly 7,000 feet from shore to shore.

Casting a line in Rondout Creek

Rondout Creek meanders along the northwestern-facing edge of High Falls, and anglers cast lines for bass, walleye and other fish along its tree-lined, sometimes-rocky banks. The High Falls Waterfalls cascade in the river just northwest, as well. Less than 10 miles northeast, a boat launch near Creek Locks Road allows for small craft to be put into the water, and the Rondout Creek Public Fishing Hole sits just beyond High Falls. To the south, the Table Rocks provide a picturesque hiking area, while the Mohonk Preserve is a popular site for climbing, hiking and other recreation. “It’s actually one of the best rock-climbing areas in the country,” Kowatch says. “It’s world-known as one of the best rock-climbing places – famous rock climbers actually come to Mohonk and the Shawangunk Ridge.”

Single-family homes scattered throughout High Falls

Homes are concentrated in several areas within High Falls, with dense foliage comprising much of the neighborhood. In the residential areas, though, properties are relatively close together. “You get a sense of knowing people in that area,” Kowatch says. Colonials, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are the primary architectural designs within High Falls; more unique designs could feature Dutch colonial elements or even be the site of a former museum. Most single-family homes are priced between $250,000 and $350,000, though larger properties could go for $500,000 or more.

Multiple routes to the New York State Thruway

Multiple routes to the New York State Thruway
High Falls residents are just over 10 miles away from accessing the highway, having to make their way west to Route 209 and then turn northeast to get to the New York State Thruway. It’s nearly the same distance to the main area of Kingston. “Everything’s easy to get to,” Kowatch says. “They all kind of interconnect. They’re all close enough to be everything’s user-friendly.” New York City is almost 100 miles south of the neighborhood and Albany is nearly 70 miles north. Farther beyond state lines, both Boston and Philadelphia are each around 200 miles from High Falls.
