Former farmland is now happy housing community
What used to be abundant farmland that supplied Chicagoans with fresh produce in the early 20th century is now a charming Indiana suburb. “Overall, this is a community with a really good mixture of people,” says Josh Fingers, a Realtor with Better Homes & Gardens who moved to the area about 8 years ago. “There are lots of families, young professionals and trades people. There are several thriving mills around Highland.”

Reasonable homes and taxes
Housing styles in the area include townhomes, ranch-style, brick tri-levels and custom-builds. Homes with private driveways and garages sit back from tree-lined streets. Sidewalks are found throughout the area. Home prices in Highland range from about $170,000 for a small ranch to about $560,000 for a custom-built brick Colonial. “The people who come here from Illinois are always happy with how low the home prices and the taxes are,” says Fingers.

Persevering students
Public schools are served by the School Town of Highland district. Mildred Merkley Elementary holds a B-plus rating from Niche. Highland Middle School has a B rating. Highland High School holds a B-plus rating. In 2023, a fire destroyed a wing of the school. Students, teachers and administrators are making do and working around the challenges presented by the blaze. A bond referendum to rebuild the school has been approved, but construction will take time. Despite the challenges, students continue to flourish academically and athletically.

Parks, playgrounds and sand dunes
With more than 22 parks in the community, residents are always close to a pleasant green space. Wicker Memorial Park provides 226 acres of outdoor fun, including a golf course, playground, miles of trails, a dog park and even a splash pad. When the weather is warm, locals head to Main Square to enjoy a summer concert series, a beer garden, food vendors and a playground for the little ones. Sheppard Park has a skate park for those who like to skate. For those who prefer the indoors, people of all ages come together at Lincoln Community Center for fitness courses, classes and cultural programs. “Highland is only 20 minutes from Indiana Dunes National Park,” says Fingers. “A lot of people love to go hiking there.” The national park borders Lake Michigan for 15 miles. For thousands of years, winds and waves have shaped the coastline and left a variety of habitats. Over 50 miles of trails lead through the park’s shifting sand dunes, prairies and woodlands.

Parades and pierogis
The City of Highland puts on events throughout the year, including a Downtown Restaurant Crawl, where participating restaurants feature five-dollar specials so neighbors can enjoy their local favorites while trying out new spots. Main Square Park holds family friendly events throughout the year, including a Twelfth Night Tree Burning in January and a Fourth of July Festival. Later in July, many Highlanders head to nearby Whiting for the annual Pierogi Fest. Besides an array of vendors selling pierogis and other food, this light-hearted event also includes a parade starring babushka-wearing grandmas and a sandals-and-socks-adorned lawnmower brigade.
Getting around the town
Highland is located 31 miles south of downtown Chicago and 41 miles southeast of Midway International Airport. Indianapolis Boulevard is the main thoroughfare that runs north-south through Highland and provides access to I-94. Bus and rail service are available. Highland is a walkable city.
Residents of Highland will commute to Chicago via 80 94.
Highland sits just 32 miles south of downtown Chicago.
