Summer concert festivals and lakeside beaches in Highland Park
Situated along the shores of Lake Michigan, Highland Park offers access to the lake and an active music scene. The city is the seat of the Ravinia Festival—an outdoor music festival that runs from May to September and draws music lovers from all over Chicago. “For the majority of Highland Park, we know how to maneuver around its traffic,” says Realtor Lisa Schulkin with @properties. “But having it in our backyard is a huge, huge plus.” While Ravinia brings visitors from across Chicagoland for the summer, Highland Park’s 30,000 residents also living along the water and homes designed by famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright.

Highland Park's four beaches and five golf courses
Highland Park manages three public beaches on the shore. Rosewood Beach is the only one where people can swim, with lifeguards posted during the summer. Moraine Beach, however, is the only dog-friendly beach. Millard Beach also isn’t open for swimming, but has a rock garden where people can relax alongside the shoreline. Park Avenue Boating Facility is home to the North Shore Yacht Club and docks where people can go fishing or take out sailboats and paddleboards. Sunset Wood Park offers various athletic courts and a playground designed to look like a spaceship alongside the city’s only skate park. In addition to its four lakeside parks, the city also offers five golf courses.
Rosewood Beach is a popular spot for swimming, sunbathing and picnicking.

Multi-million dollar lakeside mansions in Highland Park
Highland Park’s median housing price is much higher than the state and national price, sitting at around $716,000. “The majority of homes are unique in their own way — there’s a huge crop of different types of homes here,” Schulkin says. Houses showcase architect and owner personality, ranging from Colonial Revivals, Tudors and French chateaus to contemporary, luxury condos and custom lakeside mansions. Many of these houses, especially those closer to the lake, can sell much higher than the median price, starting at $1 to $1.5 million. Additional condo and townhome properties tend to sell closer to the $300,000 to $400,000 range. Both the violent and property crime rates in Highland Park are significantly lower than the state and national rates. According to FBI data, property crimes fell by 77% in 2023. Violent crimes are exceedingly rare, with fewer than 30 counted annually since 2015 and only five cases in 2023.

Setting up on the lawn for concerts at Ravinia Festival
Throughout the warmer months, Ravinia Festival hosts concerts out of its outdoor venue. “They have concerts probably five to six nights a week,” Schulkin says. “And the vast majority of it is lawn seating, so people will go out hours and hours before the concerts to set up makeshift picnic tables and chairs and go all out with wine and cheese spreads.” Musical acts include well-known names, like James Taylor, to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, which makes the grounds its summer residency every year. When not attending a Ravinia concert, residents can look forward to other annual traditions Port Clinton Art Festival, which features over 200 artists for a weekend in late August in downtown Highland Park.

The city has four Metra stations—all sitting along the Union Pacific North line and connecting to downtown Chicago, about 27 miles south. The Highland Park station stops right in downtown, allowing people to access its shops and restaurants, while the Ravinia Park station stops at the concert venue. U.S. Route 41 runs along the western side of the community, offering another option for commuters heading to Chicago. Buses powered by Pace are mostly concentrated around downtown. Endeavor Health Highland Park Hospital is one of the major employers in the city and sits off Green Bay Road. "East Highland Park has so much to offer," says Realtor Allison Silver, who sells houses in the neighborhood with Compass. "We have a great city council. The mayor and city manager love the town and support everyone here. People who come here fall in love with the people, the community and the lifestyle." The neighborhood has multiple amenities within walking distance. "It's a big city in a little town. You've got homes from the 1800s, new constructions and mid-century moderns." The well-manicured lots line windy suburban streets. The architectural offerings include houses designed by prominent American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
