Highland Village offers a relaxed pace of life outside Dallas. "You have people choosing between moving here or Frisco. You avoid the traffic here, and the schools are just as great. You have a hometown feel and community," says Timi Grogan, local resident at Associate Broker at Repeat Realty. "People would come up here to build their lake homes, and that's kind of how Highland Village got started back in the 60s and 70s. The northeast side of Highland Village is the older part; when you go further to the west, you have newer developments."

Sprawling brick homes in subdivisions
Homes in Highland Village largely consist of large, brick, new traditional houses with four or more bedrooms priced between $500,000 and $700,000. These homes often feature grand, double-story entryways with columns, two-car garages, and details like arched windows and steeply pitched roofs. Many homes have private pools, and although many houses sit close together in subdivisions, large shade trees and landscaping offer some privacy. Lakefront properties sometimes feature more extravagant styles, with sprawling homes costing up to $2 million. "Lake Lewisville no longer allows boat docks to be built, but homes with a boat dock are grandfathered in. So that's a desired amenity," Grogan says.

Recreation on Lewisville Lake and Doubletree Ranch Park
Residents enjoy boating, swimming, and watersports on Lewisville Lake, and a boat launch and trail system connect the area. "From the shore, you can grab one of the fingers of the lake, and there are trails where you can walk around the community. People like that," Grogan says. Doubletree Ranch Park is another hangout spot for residents. "It's gorgeous. You have a splash pad and a huge barn people can rent out for events." The park also has trails connecting through the town, a pond with a fishing pier and several soccer fields. Residents looking for more outdoor amenities should consider Highland Shores. "Highland Shores is a community in Highland Village developed in the 80s. It has an amazing trail system, great pools where they do meets, and tennis courts," Grogan says.

Celebrate Highland Village and free events at Doubletree Ranch Park
The town's largest event is Celebrate Highland Village in June, hosting a concert and fireworks over the lake. "It draws people from all over the DFW Metro. A few years back, it got so big that they stopped promoting it. But the people who know, know. The fireworks are awesome," Grogan says. Doubletree Ranch Park also has its annual Easter egg hunt in the spring, free movies and the Highland Village Art Festival in May, and free concerts in October.

Local and chain restaurants at The Shops at Highland Village
The Shops at Highland Village has a variety of shopping and dining options, including locally owned spots and chains like the Cheesecake Factory and Blue Goose. Among the local options is Lambeau's America, which serves elevated bar food classics. "The owner is a huge Green Bay Packers fan, so the restaurant is named after the stadium. He also owns Shoal Creek Tavern. People like to go there to support him," Grogan says. Sip + Savor is another family-owned restaurant that serves California-style fare. "The ladies of the community will go for lunch, sit on the patio and sip their craft cocktails there," Grogan says. The shopping area also has a Whole Foods and an AMC theater.

Getting to downtown Dallas by car and train
Highland Village is 15 miles north of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and 30 miles northwest of downtown Dallas. Residents access downtown by car via Interstate 35E. "People are getting around by car, but we do have the light rail system. Dallas has the DART rail, and when it comes out of Dallas County, it's the Denton County Transit Authority, which has a train that connects to the DART. You can go from Highland Village all the way down to southern Dallas," Grogan says.
