Living in the hills or near Hillsboro's bustling Main Street
Hillsborough, also spelled colloquially as Hillsboro, is a small New Hampshire town just southwest of Henniker. Hillsboro “is in a very pretty part of the state. There are a lot of natural resources for outdoor recreation, like hiking and lakes,” says Realtor Charles Boucher with EXP Realty, who has over 15 years of experience. The neighborhood is best known for its hilly Main Street - which turns into Henniker Street - full of historic buildings and locally owned businesses near the Contoocook River. Nearby lakes and rail trails make it easy to get outside and play, and all three neighborhood schools are on the same campus within a short distance of many residential neighborhoods. Housing is scattered throughout Hillsboro, allowing homebuyers to live closer to Main Street or out in the quiet forests and hills.
State forests, lakes, parks, trails and the Contoocook River
Hillsboro has a lot to offer for those who enjoy the outdoors. “There are a couple of lakes here, like Franklin Pierce Lake which has a town beach, so there, and at Highland Lake, you can swim. There’s also the Franklin Pierce Homestead historical site,” says Susan Roemer, a Realtor with The Masiello Group with Better Homes and Gardens and a West Concord resident. Franklin Pierce was the 14th president of the United States, and visitors can see where he lived until 1843.
Golfers can play nine holes at Angus Lea Golf Course, while hikers can explore the Contoocook River Walk or the Monadnock Rail Trail, both of which follow the river’s edge. Families can spend time near Main Street at several small parks, such as Butler Park by the Hillsborough Historical Society and Kemp Park near the river. Grimes Field has tennis courts and ballfields for after-work or summertime leagues.
Hillsboro is also about 20 minutes away from Pats Peak Ski Area to the north and the Crotched Mountain ski resort to the south.

Housing can range from A-frame cabins to large Colonial revivals
Buyers can find an assortment of A-frame cabins, modest Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals at the $200,000 to $350,000 price range. These homes often have smaller yards but spacious porches, patios and decks that overlook the woods. “Generally speaking, you’ll find [housing] prices a little less here than if you’re heading east to Concord,” Boucher says. At that price, there is also a selection of chalets in the Emerald Lake Village community, which surrounds Gould Pond.
Between $400,000 and $500,000, buyers will find ranch-style homes raised on hilly driveways, as well as larger Colonials and updated cabins. There are also several newer constructions in the Bible Hill Development of Hillsborough, which have traditional elements, two-car garages and can reach closer to 2,000 square feet for interiors. At this price, there are also a few waterfront chalets with beach access, which were built in the 1970s.
Residences between $600,000 and $700,000 include stately homes on Franklin Pierce Lake, completely renovated Gould Pond waterfront cabins and contemporary ranch-style homes on top of nearby mountains.
