Historic homes and outdoor recreation in Neshanic

Neshanic is a rural community along the Raritan River that’s known for its historic buildings and outdoor recreation. “People are drawn here for its beauty,” says Kristin D’Avanzo, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty who’s sold homes in the area. “There are a lot of historic homes and farmland, and you’ve got the river. But it’s still centrally located.” The river is a popular spot for kayaking and fly fishing, and 19th-century train trestles and a restored mill along its shores nod to the area’s past. Neshanic was founded in the mid-1700s, and the Neshanic Reformed Church, built in 1772, is the oldest continuously used church in New Jersey. Somerville is a 20-minute drive, and New York is about an hour away.

A blend of Colonial-era and new traditional homes

Hilly pastures and forests line Neshanic’s narrow country roads. Some of the Federal and Stick homes along River Road date back to the 18th century and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These and the community’s farms rarely come on the market. Other homes here include midcentury ranch-style houses and 1990s Colonial Revival-style new traditional houses that sit on a half-acre to 5 acres. Prices vary by condition, size and acreage, ranging from around $450,000 to $750,000 for homes under 3,000 square feet and $900,000 to $1.8 million for larger homes.

Hiking areas and Raritan River recreation

While there are no parks in Neshanic, the area features hiking and Raritan River access. The river is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing and swimming. The 1-mile South Branch River Walk Trail hugs the river and provides views of the historic Lane Grist Mill, a 19th-century mill that’s been recently restored. The 6,300-acre Sourland Mountain Preserve offers more hiking through natural areas, and hikers can see the New York City skyline from here on clear days. The public Neshanic Valley Golf Course nearby features three nine-hole courses and a learning center with an indoor golf simulator.

Neshanic Station restaurants

There are a few shopping and dining options across the river in Neshanic Station. “The Riverside Inn just opened recently and has been a big draw,” D’Avanzo says. “It’s been there forever, and they just renovated it and have live music and outdoor dining.” Historically called the Neshanic Inn, it was built in the 1880s as a hotel, but today it’s a restaurant that serves classic American comfort food. La Strada Café is known for its Italian dishes and wood-fired pizza. National retailers are about 10 minutes away in Hillsborough, and nearby grocery stores include 206 Farmers Market, ShopRite and Patidar Supermarket.

A car-reliant neighborhood about 20 minutes from Somerville

Neshanic sits far from busy areas, and residents rely on their cars to get around. U.S. Routes 202 and 206 are both 4 miles away and connect to area interstates. New York City is about 52 miles away, and the nearest commuter train is in Somerville, 10 miles away; the train takes just over an hour to reach Penn Station. Flooding risk near the Raritan River

Homes close to the Raritan River and its tributaries may be at high risk for flooding, and homeowners here might have to buy flood insurance. “A lot of the homes are set up high,” D’Avanzo says, which reduces flood risk. She also notes that Riverside Drive can flood during extreme storms.
