Baseball history brings a unique spin to Hillside Township

Hillside Township derived its name from the rolling agricultural terrain that the community was originally founded on. “This is a green area with lots of plants and trees,” says Rosmena DeSa, a realtor with RE/MAX New Millennium. “It has a very suburban look.” Today, some might say that baseball is at the core of the town’s identity, too. “Phil Rizzuto used to live here, and his stamp is everywhere,” says Sagrario Javier, a real estate agent with EXP Realty, referring to the shortstop who brought success to the New York Yankees during the 40s and 50s. At the Hillside Historical Society, visitors will find the Phil Rizzuto and All Sports Museum honoring him and other local athletes. Beyond history, though, Hillside Township offers a suburban setting dotted with retail and traversed by major transportation routes. Only six miles south of Newark, the neighborhood scores a 4 out of 10 on the CAP crime index.

Classic housing styles starting at $400,000

Housing in Hillside Township leans towards a classic look, populated with boxy two-story houses containing three to four bedrooms – although a few larger five-bedroom properties are mixed in. Many of the genres are resolutely traditional and American, such as colonial homes and midcentury split levels. But there’s also Dutch and British influence in the neighborhood, particularly with Tudor homes. Regardless of style, the price range in Hillside Township is consistent: three-bedroom homes from the 20s and 30s are in the low $400,000 range but midcentury properties with four or five bedrooms can easily rise into the mid $500,000s. There are some multi-family properties in the $600,000 to $700,000 range as well. Slate, tan, cream and muted blue make up the modest color palette of homes here.

Hillside High students can earn college credits

Deanna Taylor Academy earns a C-plus and covers 2nd through 6th grade. Krumbiegel Middle, which offers classes for 7th and 8th grade, receives as C-minus as well. Hillside High has an 11-to-1 student-teacher ratio and is rated C-plus. Kean University borders the township, so select high school students can earn college credits and participate in internships through the Kean Scholar Academy. A private religious education option is available with Trinity Temple Academy, located on Maple Avenue next to Fellowship Baptist Church and Congregation Sinai Torat Chaim.

Elizabeth River Park offers waterside fun

When it’s time for outdoor recreation, many locals head to Elizabeth River Park on the west end. There are trails, ball fields and structures for kids to play on. Conant Park, the largest park in Hillside, connected and offers more space to roam or to set up group gatherings. Paul Korlesky Park is near these two, offering more opportunity for active fun with a playground, basketball courts and tennis courts.

Brazilian eateries like Pao De Mel bring the flavor

The neighborhood has a pair of conventional grocery stores, both located in shopping centers: Seabra Foods and Shop Rite. The dining scene is eclectic, though, adding spice to an otherwise placid suburban setting. “Hillside Township has a lot of good Brazilian and Portuguese food,” says Javier. While larger chains like Taco Bell are strung along Highway 22, the smaller locally owned eateries that Javier speaks about are found on adjacent streets. “Pao De Mel Bakery is really good,” she says, referring to a Brazilian bakery on Liberty Avenue that serves specialties like Honey Cakes – a spiced cake and caramel center that’s dipped in milk chocolate. Delis and diners are around, too, but places like Long Ave BBQ put a Portuguese spin on a foodie favorite.
