A Hilton Head Island community that celebrates its Gullah roots
The Squire Pope neighborhood of Hilton Head Island is rich in history. It was the largest Gullah neighborhood founded on the island in the 1860s, filled with farmers and shrimp boat captains who dropped their nets in Skull Creek. The community’s Gullah roots are celebrated today, even as the neighborhood grows. Acclaimed restaurants and lower-priced homes than other parts of the island make it a community on the rise, as does its position. “The location is great because you are near the Cross Island Parkway,” says Kelly Ruhlin, a realtor with Weichert Realtors Coastal Properties. “You can get to downtown Bluffton. You can get to the south end of the island in no time. There are bike paths. That’s the benefit.”
Squire Pope is known for its scenic marsh views and serene atmosphere.
It's a hub for fishing, boating, and outdoor activities.
