Holbrook, 53 miles from New York City, has been known for its convenience since 1844, when the Long Island Rail Road first crossed the community. That reputation continues as the town borders the Long Island MacArthur Airport and is 2 miles from Ronkonkoma train station. “Commuters love living here,” says Norma Dispenza, a licensed real estate agent at Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty who has been working in Long Island since 2008. “You’re a little over an hour outside New York City by car or train.” Popular local restaurants line Main Street, and the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce organizes yearly community events. While many Holbrook business owners benefit from the active Chamber of Commerce, the organization also acts as a resource for residents, advocating for improved sidewalks, streetlights and other updates. The group is working on a beautification project and aims to add sidewalks and dissuade littering along the north entrance of the hamlet. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Holbrook's population was 27,220 in 2022. Most residents commute to New York City for work or work at local health care offices along Union Street. Holbrook is home to many locally owned businesses, and retail trade is one of the area's largest industries.

Single-family homes with yards big enough for a pool
Most of Holbrook is made up of gridded streets lined with single-family homes and mature trees. A few subdivisions line Patchogue-Holbrook Road, such as The Colony at Holbrook, and have private amenities like pools and tennis courts. No matter the subdivision, two-car garages and yards big enough for pools and sidewalks are the norm in Holbrook. Most Homes in the area are in the split-level, Cape Cod, Colonial Revival and ranch-styles with a median price of $610,000, putting Holbrook above the national median. Townhouses, condos and multifamily homes are also typical in the area. “For homebuyers, Holbrook is always at the top of their lists. People move here and never leave,” says Larry McKenna, a team leader and licensed real estate salesperson with Signature Premier Properties, who’s also a Holbrook local. The CAP Index crime score is a 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.

Commuters use I-495 and Ronkonkoma train station
Commonly referred to as the Long Island Expressway, Interstate 495 runs through Holbrook’s northern half, making New York City a 60- to 90-minute drive west, depending on traffic. Ronkonkoma is the nearest train station, sitting 2 miles west. Residents who live close to Main Street might catch a Suffolk Country Transit bus to reach the station. The Long Island MacArthur Airport is near the train station and offers commercial flights. “People directly under the flight path can hear the planes, but being close to the airport far outweighs the sound,” McKenna says. The Long Island Community Hospital is 7 miles away.
