Holland provides small towns living near Temple and Austin
Holland offers buyers a quiet environment within commuting distance to Temple, Killeen and the Austin metro. The community’s stock of single-family homes has been steadily growing as several nearby cities have experienced rapid growth and development, which has extended to the area. While Holland serves as a bedroom community, it includes a small downtown with shops and restaurants, as well as a strong public school system. Farming is a major industry as well which is celebrated via the annual Corn Fest, attracting hundreds of visitors to this town of over 1,000 residents.
A growing inventory of single-family homes with no HOAs
Home architecture is primarily cottages and ranch styles, along with one- and two-story New Traditionals. Prices range from below $200,000 to over $700,000. Some properties can cost well over $1 million.
Holland has seen an influx of new housing and subdivisions, including Holland Estates, a Lennar development. The growth is primarily due to nearby cities such as Salado, Temple and Georgetown seeing rapid growth that has since trickled into Holland. “I think as far as Texas is developing right now, I think Holland would be one of the small towns you would look at that will survive and survive well as a bedroom community,” says Adriene Proctor, a Realtor with Legend Texas Properties who lives near Holland. “I don’t think it’s going to get crazily populated over there.”
There are no homeowners’ associations at present. However, Proctor says that some new subdivisions are considering HOA control. Properties close to the center of town are typically on gridded streets with large oak trees accenting lawns. Farmsteads, ranches and homes with more acreage are on the outskirts.
The Holland Independent School District is top-rated
Public school students can attend the top-rated Holland Independent School District. Students are allowed to transfer to a different district if they meet specific criteria and if room is available. Holland Elementary, Holland Middle and Holland High are all top-rated.
Corn Fest is the hallmark event of the year
Holland City Park features a playground, a multipurpose field and several baseball diamonds. The Holland Community Center has a rentable space. In the summer the town hosts the annual Holland Corn Festival. The multiday event honors the crop grown in nearby fields and includes a pageant, a parade, a 5K run and live music. “Corn Fest is always fun,” says Proctor.
Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Granger Lake, both over 20 miles away, allow for boating and fishing. The Robert Trent Jones-designed Mill Creek Golf Club in Salado has a 27-hole layout.
Dining in downtown while shopping is done in Salado and Temple
Locally owned restaurants are along Franklin Street or Austin Street. Svizzero serves pizza, sandwiches and salads. Taqueria Sonora has Mexican dishes, while T.X. BBQ offers barbecued brisket, ribs and pulled pork.
Franklin Street has a Dollar General and several convenience stores. Big box retailers are in Temple to the north, while Salado has a Brookshire Brothers grocery store.
The interstate and airports are a drive away
Residents are car dependent. The entrance to Interstate 35 is 9 miles away on Farm to Market Road 2268. Killeen Fort Hood Regional Airport is 35 miles away, but it only offers flights to Dallas Fort Worth International. Austin-Bergstrom International is over 60 miles south. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center- Temple is 16 miles away.
Weather risks are present in Holland
Maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency show a risk of flooding near local creeks. Tornadoes and severe storms can also be a factor.
