"When you're out in Hollywood Hills, you see your community out on golf carts, kids playing together in the streets, and everyone waves at each other," says Alex Carrasco, broker at the Alex Carrasco Group. He's a decades-long Hollywood Hills resident, a member of The Nativity Men's Club of Hollywood Hills and a Hollywood Hills Civic Association board member. "I knew I would start my family here right away. All my best friends have become my neighbors within a mile or two of the house. The kids here go to the same schools, and some return to the schools as teachers or send their kids there as adults."

Ranch-style homes decades in the making
"Hollywood Hills is all single-family, though there are a few villas and a few other buildings as well on the outskirts that kind of meld with the neighborhood," Carrasco shares. These options run the gamut from $140,000 to $440,000, while options in Hollywood Hills proper range from 2 to 5 bedrooms and $600,000 to $1.5 million. Many brick or stucco ranch-style homes here have two-car driveways with space for a basketball net, backyard space ripe for pool installations or landscaping, and spacious porches or overhangs. Streetlights keep sidewalks safe for night strolls, and trash is picked up weekly in the neighborhood's back alleyways. "If you read between the lines, it's often a short-lived sale, but long-lived housing, like 20 to 30 years," Carrasco says. "You feel the love when you walk into the houses—they're homes that feel good with a lot of family history and all kinds of pictures and memories on the walls."

Hollywood Hills shopping and restaurant legends
Big-box grocery options like Target and Publix sit beside chain retail and dining on the west side of Hollywood Hills. "There are also Spanish, Italian and Kosher supermarkets close to home," says Carrasco. "The Italian supermarket is legendary, really—everyone knows Mimi's Ravioli because of the quality and the family that owns it lived most of their lives in the neighborhood. They're very generous with fundraisers and very involved with the community. Rickey's is a chicken wing place where you walk in, and you know pretty much half the restaurant. And Sake Thai and Sushi is, in my opinion, the best sushi in Hollywood. These are traditions for us—if we need to cater something, we call one of those."

Events put on by your neighbors
Residents gather annually for events sponsored by the active Hollywood Hills Civic Association. Neighbors await Nativity Catholic Church's All-American Jamboree each year, with game booths, food vendors, rides and more in store. Kids run wild in artificial snow on the lawn of Hollywood Hills United Methodist Church each December during SnowFest. The Greater Hollywood YMCA Family Center hosts an annual Beach Ball to fund free swim lessons for local kids, and the ArtsPark at Young Circle hosts arts-focused community events every weekend and holiday.
Schools for Hollywood Hills students
Kids can start at Hollywood Hills Elementary School or Sheridan Hills Elementary School, earning a B-plus and a B-minus from Niche, respectively. From there, they move on to Olsen Middle School, which earns a C, and South Broward High School—a marine science magnet school—which earns a B-plus. Alternatively, students can attend centrally located Nativity Catholic School before transferring next door to Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School, both of which earn an A. Many children attend after-school programs or Hebrew schools run by local parishes, synagogues or the YMCA.

Catching up with neighbors at Hollywood Hills parks
Hollywood Hills residents take night strolls on the lighted walking trail at Zinkil Park, while children enjoy the playground during the day. Another favorite spot is the Sal Oliveri Veterans Park, which features a picnic shelter, playground structures, artificial turf and a palm tree that sprays water to create the effect of summer showers. The clay courts at David Park Tennis Center often teem with locals and USTA competitors.

Locals can walk to other hotspots in Hollywood from their homes or even walk the mile to work at Memorial Regional Hospital. The Tri-Rail train runs hourly, taking locals from the Hollywood station to these cities. For longer journeys, residents head 7 miles to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
