Holts Summit offers rural charm near major metro areas

Holts Summit is a small city of 4,500 people, about 10 miles northeast of the Missouri River. "It's just over the bridge from Jefferson City , and it's very convenient to Columbia ," says April Reed, a Realtor with Exp Realty. "But it's still got some nice rural spots. You can get some acreage out there." The CAP Index Crime Score for Holts Summit is 2 out of 10 — lower than the national average of 4 — and the local high school was recently ranked the best in Jefferson City Metro Area, according to U.S. News and World Report. "They've got some of the best teachers in the area," says Kim Idel, an agent with ReMax Jefferson City.

Housing options range from starter homes to hilltop estates

Neighborhoods are set on winding streets across gentle hills. Lots are typically a third of an acre or larger, often featuring fenced-in yards and the shade of mature trees. Most homes are contemporary models from the 21st century, including Craftsman and New Traditional styles, with prices ranging from $200,000 to $440,000. Midcentury homes are also available, typically priced from $150,000 to $300,000. On the city outskirts, luxury homes on multiple acres go for $440,000 to $900,000, including some homes with hilltop views.

Area schools combine academic strength with athletic success

Students can begin at North Elementary School, which receives a B-plus from Niche, before heading to Lewis and Clark Middle School, which gets a B. Jefferson City High School receives a B-plus and boasts several athletic achievements, including runner-up state championships for boys basketball and girls volleyball teams in 2024. In 2025, U.S. News and World Report named the high school the best in the Jefferson City Metro Area. Intra-district open enrollment is also available for students who qualify.

Outdoor spaces include disc golf, volleyball and an amphitheater

At 55 acres, Greenway Park is the largest public facility of its kind in Holts Summit. In addition to a walking trail, sand volleyball courts and a disc golf course, it features two baseball fields, a civic center for local events and an amphitheater pavilion for live performances. In 2025, Hibernia Park had new inclusive features installed in its playground, including a play tower and swing set. Held every fall since 2010, the Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament invites golfers of all skill levels to compete for bragging rights, prizes and the chance to raise money for worthy causes.

Groceries, fast food and casual dining are close to home

Shopping centers like Summit Plaza and Callaway Plaza have various general stores, services and fast food options. Moser's Foods is available for groceries. The Summit Café offers daily specials and a laid-back, family friendly atmosphere. Lazy Jay's Saloon is best known for its menu of classic bar food favorites, various game day events and live music. With ample outdoor seating and locally made wines, the Canterbury Hill Winery and Restaurant is a popular site for locals and visitors alike.
