Laid-back neighborhood with waterfront restaurants and recreation

Ten miles south of Crystal River on the west coast of Florida sits Homosassa. “It’s an amazing place to live as it offers so many outdoor activities,” says Kent Rodahaver, a Realtor with Nexthome South Pointe. “It has such an authentic “Old Florida” feel, and the community is tight-knit and friendly.” Homosassa has a variety of events throughout the year to bring the community together, from their Arts, Crafts and Seafood Festival to the Fireworks Festival. The neighborhood also has waterfront recreation and restaurants, which add to the laid-back atmosphere. “People flock to this area to take a step back, relax and enjoy,” says Tonya Kramer, a Realtor with Trotter Realty.

From the Salt Marsh Trails to the Old Homosassa Heritage Park

Homosassa is home to the Salt Marsh Trails, a pack-in, pack-out collection of trails. The trails run through the Crystal River Wildlife Refuge. Old Homosassa Heritage Park has a shrimp boat playground and views of the Homosassa River. Homosassa is also home to the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park, which used to be home to a 5,000-acre sugar plantation. The park offers a pavilion, grills and tables. Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is also in the area, giving visitors a chance to bird watch, go on a boat tour or go hiking. Visitors can also see various captive animals, from alligators to red wolves. Those with dogs can take them to the Citrus County Dog Park. Those with a boat can launch it from the Homosassa Public Boat Ramp.

Ranch-style, coastal homes on stilts and waterfront properties

Homes in Homosassa come as manufactured, ranch-style, coastal homes on stilts and larger beach-style properties. Many of these homes are waterfront, with some sporting docks and boat lifts. Waterfront homes have sold for between $400,000 and $1.3 million, while homes that are not waterfront have gone for between $180,000 and $680,000. “It’s a strong market,” says Nadeene Horak, a Realtor with Sail Home Realty. “People want to be near the water.” Homosassa does not have sidewalks, so residents rely on cars to get around.

From the Arts, Crafts and Seafood Festival to the Fireworks Festival

The Homosassa Civic Club hosts the Homosassa Arts, Crafts and Seafood Festival every November. The event has been around for nearly 50 years and includes beer, music, seafood and arts and crafts. In late June every year, Homosassa hosts its Firework Festival at Florida Cracker Riverside Resort. The event, along with fireworks, includes live music and contests. “People travel from hundreds of miles away for these and many other area festivals,” Rodahaver says. “One can find something fun and exciting to do nearly every weekend in Homosassa.”

Selection of waterfront seafood restaurants

The Freezer Tiki Bar is a seafood restaurant on the water. “It’s a great eating destination and is known for its fresh seafood, cold beer and casual experience,” Rodahaver says. McRae’s of Homosassa has a motel and does boat rentals but also has a Riverfront Tiki Bar called The Shed, which serves seafood with views of the water. Across the river from there is Crump’s Landing, which, along with The Shed, has boat docks so customers can pull up, dock and eat. The restaurant serves seafood and along with burgers and sandwiches. There is a Publix nearby in Homosassa Springs for grocery shopping.

Students assigned to Citrus County Schools

Residents of Homosassa are assigned to attend Citrus County Schools. Starting in pre-kindergarten, children attend Homosassa Elementary, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. In sixth grade, students head to Crystal River Middle before moving on to Crystal River High, both of which also receive a B-minus grade from Niche. Crystal River High has a selection of extra-curricular programs students can participate in, from Future Farmers of America to Key Club. As for private school options, Seven Rivers Christian Schools serves pre-K through 12th grade, earns a B from Niche and is 10 miles northeast of Homosassa.

Located next to U.S. Route 98

U.S. Route 98 runs along the eastern border of Homosassa. Route 98 runs from Palm Beach to Pensacola. There is no public transportation in Homosassa. Nearby cities include Ocala, 44 miles away and Tampa, 74 miles away. The Tampa International Airport is a 68-mile drive. The nearest hospital is the Tampa General Hospital Crystal River, 15 miles away.
