Hooverson Heights offers woodsy, hillside living near Follansbee
Surrounded by lush green forests, Hooverson Heights is a bedroom community just outside the city of Follansbee's limits. "We're pretty much right beside each other, except most of Follansbee is down on the riverbank of the Ohio, and you have to go up on top of the hill to get to Hooverson Heights," says Michael "Mac" Casini, the city's office manager. Two rural roads keep residents connected to nearby businesses, parks and industrial employers, like Wheeling-Nippon Steel and Empire Diversified Energy. Students are no more than 3 miles from their assigned schools, and community events throughout the year help to bring neighbors together.

Ranch and Cape Cod homes line narrow and hilly dead-end streets
Ranch-style houses, bungalows and Cape Cods are the most common styles in the community. Still, split-level homes and raised ranches help accommodate the area's gentle hills. The neighborhood also has a small manufactured home community. Prices range between $65,000 and $260,000, depending on a home's condition and size. Grass lawns range from small to mid-sized. Driveways, back alleys and the occasional garage keep vehicles off the neighborhood's narrow roads. Many streets dead-end into the forests surrounding residential clusters.

No Ohio River access, but Follansbee parks offer spots to play
The largest park near Hooverson Heights is Follansbee Park. Trees surround the park's playground, community house and seasonal swimming pool. Softball and baseball fields are available around the corner. "It's a pretty nice park for a town our size," Casini says. Mahan Park has a more urban setting, but gated basketball courts, play spaces and picnic areas keep kids away from street traffic. Small neighborhood parks like Jefferson Park have at least a small playground shaded by trees. Over by Brooke High School, crowds gather at Brooke Memorial Stadium to watch fall football.
Although the neighborhood is near the Ohio River, residents drive about 6 miles south into Wellsburg to launch boats onto the water. "We're like 15 feet above water level, so there's no public access to the river," Casini says. "It's all mostly industrial along the water."

Christmas carols fill the air as people admire a giant nutcracker display from the iconic Steubenville collection. Vendors sell Christmas decorations and gifts. Kids snack on cookies and cocoa as Santa tells stories and takes pictures.
