Sugar Mill has new construction and 21st-century homes
Sugar Mill offers newer construction while remaining close to Houma's amenities. "The area has some of the higher-priced luxury homes in Houma. You'll see doctors and lawyers. It's right off 311, and unfortunately, it is hit or miss with the flood zones," says Realtor Beau Toups with Century 21 Action Realty. The community is excellent for those who may want a larger or more updated home but don't want to be too far from the action. It's also home to some excellently rated schools and well-kept parks, so families may be attracted to moving to this section of Houma.
Higher-priced homes and townhouses on Bayou Black
The neighborhood has wide, sunny streets and neat lots decorated with mulberry, oak and palmetto trees. Several subdivisions fill the area, typically featuring New Traditional homes and ranch-style houses listed between $245,000 and $335,000. Alternatively, larger homes and mansions with Cape Cod or Neoclassical-inspired exteriors are priced between $470,000 and $800,000. There's also a small townhouse community on Bayou Black, where prices are typically between $270,000 and $300,000. With the community's sunny, hot climate, many homes have backyard pools, and some homes feature solar panels for energy efficiency. Most homes in Sugar Mill are at risk of significant flooding during storms, such as Hurricane Francine in 2024. Residents can purchase private flood insurance or enroll in the National Flood Insurance Program. Homeowner's insurance is another necessity for inevitable hurricane damage, though rising deductible prices or issues with insurance companies have caused some homeowners to go without.
Students attend standout Terrebonne High
Students may attend Terrebonne Parish School District, starting with Mulberry Elementary. This school earns an A-minus rating from Niche. Houma Junior High earns an overall B-plus, and Niche ranks as the second-best middle school in the parish. Niche also puts A-minus-rated Terrebonne High in Louisiana's Top Five of Standout High Schools. In addition to the high school's noteworthy academic curriculum, the school offers a Career Compass Program, which provides yearly graduation planning assistance and college and career coaching for seniors.
Summerfield Park, Willard Avenue Park and other rec spaces
Summerfield Park is the neighborhood's closest green space, popular with local families. There are two swing sets and three playscapes for kids, and a picnic area shaded with trees for parents to keep an eye out. Other outdoor options include Willard Avenue Park, which has a tennis court, small walking path and play area, and Mulberry Park, which has a picnic pavilion and a paved walking loop surrounding a playground. Residents looking for more recreation can head west on Bayou Black Drive and trek along the Mandalay Nature Trail or use the Bayou Black Recreation Center's amenities, including a pool, sports courts and a playground.
Close to dining and retail on St. Charles Street and beyond
"This community is close to our major retail areas, which is a plus," says Realtor and resident Liz Hebert with Coldwell Banker. On St. Charles Street, there's a Rouses Market for quick grocery options and local chain eateries like La Carreta, a classic Mexican restaurant, and PJ's Coffee, which has espresso drinks and beignets. A few miles west, Martin Luther King Boulevard has a sizeable retail hub with big box stores like Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, and Lowe's. This road also has car dealerships, banks, shopping centers and many chain restaurants. Farther north, Park Avenue is home to Southland Mall, which features department stores, chain retailers and a movie theater. To Sugar Mill's east, downtown Houma has several restaurants and bars along West Main Street and Barrow Street, such as lively Spigot's Brew Pub and upscale Italian eatery Cristiano Ristorante. Another notable locale is the Bonvillain Civic Center, which hosts community events like craft shows and bingo nights. It's also a shelter for the community after hurricane events.
Major thoroughfares connect residents in Sugar Mill
The closest major thoroughfares include Little Black Bayou Drive and West Tunnel Boulevard, which turns into Martin Luther King Boulevard. These roads connect residents east to downtown Houma and northwest to the area's main commercial retail hub and Thibodaux, 18 miles away, and Highway 90. The city of Houma and Terrebonne Parish operate the Good Earth Transit system, which has several bus fixed bus routes.
