Eastwood
1900's homes in walkable Eastwood
Eastwood is notable for its extensive collection of original Craftsman, Arts and Crafts, American Foursquare and Mission-style houses, many of which have two or three bedrooms. Large Cypress trees cast shadows on the residential sidewalks, cushioned by long driveways and shrubbery. The area also has new construction, reflecting modern architectural styles, drawing attention to this small enclave. Prices can range from $250,000 for a two-bedroom at 1,300 square feet requiring renovation to $850,000 for updated Contemporary designs over 3,000 square feet. The neighborhood also features many apartments, duplexes and even a tiny home community on Dumble Street.Explore the neighborhood during the Eastwood Home Tour
Eastwood's annual events draw in residents and visitors alike, especially the historic Eastwood Home Tour in October. "It's such a good, family-oriented and business-supporting neighborhood. You see people walking their dogs and their kids. My favorite thing is when my husband walks around, points to a random tree, and tells me how some old classmate kicked him in grade school." The tour is a decades-old tradition highlighting the neighborhood's most cherished houses. When the flowers begin to bloom, the Eastwood Civic Association hosts a Spring Fiesta. "It's great to have new neighbors meet the community members that have been here for years and years." West of Eastwood Park, the Harrisburg Arts Museum is a revamped warehouse now displaying an impressive collection of street art. The neighborhood is also near Shell Energy Stadium and Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros.Summer fun at Eastwood Park
Eastwood Park is along Harrisburg Boulevard and was the first public park on the east side of Houston. This roughly 11-acre green space features a recreation complex with a swimming pool and a community center, an all-abilities playground and a skate park. Just south, Diez Street Park offers four lighted baseball fields where local little leagues practice and families gather. Gus Wortham Park Golf Course is a public course on Capitol Street, offering elevated fairways along Brays Bayou and is home to the Houston Golf Association. To the north, Antonio Marron Park fronts the bayou, connecting 30 miles of biking and hiking trails that run through the city.Tlaquepaque Market is one of Houston's oldest shopping districts
Tlaquepaque Market is considered one of the oldest shopping centers in Houston. It is a hodgepodge of brightly colored buildings housing a patchwork of small businesses and stores. "We have this pocket of little shops that are all cool. We have a thrift store, a record shop, a vintage store, a place for Mexican ice cream," says Murillo. "We have our little hole-in-the-wall eatery called Maga's, and she loves being involved in our neighborhood." Bohemeo's is a funky neighborhood coffee bar and eatery that doubles as a live music venue, underscoring Eastwood's coffee scene. Ironworks, a former oil field manufacturing company, has been repurposed as a retail, restaurant, and shared workspace. Architectural details include shipping container additions and sky-high windows. The venue offers brews from Segundo Coffee Lab, another East End staple. Less than a mile south of Ironworks, Super Happy Fun Land is an alternative venue for underground music, performances and independent art. This spot also features a Raggedy Ann doll-decorated wall that almost demands a social media post. For restocking the pantry, residents head to Kroger on Polk Street.Magnet programs at Austin High School
Families will be part of the Houston Independent School District, which has several schools in the neighborhood. On Dumble Street, Austin High School opened in 1937 and is acclaimed for its original Art Deco design. The magnet school earns a C-minus on Niche and primarily focuses on maritime studies and teaching professions. Younger students may attend C-rated Cage Elementary and C-minus-graded Navarro Middle School. Eastwood is 2 miles from the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, a public historically Black college that opened in 1947.
Close to the light rail station and Interstate 45
Eastwood is a walkable and bikeable community with plenty of bike rental services, making it easy to run errands or commute to work without a vehicle. However, like much of Houston's East End, Eastwood suffers from cargo trains stopping in the neighborhood and blocking traffic. The stopped train issue is most common around Leeland and Milby streets, and residents are encouraged to call a hotline to report these incidents. The neighborhood is conveniently located near Interstate 69 and Interstate 45 for longer commutes, providing easy access to Houston or jobs outside the city within a 3-mile drive. The Light Rail's purple line runs through the middle of Scott Road, and the green line is on Harrisburg Boulevard, with bus stops on nearly every residential block. Eastwood is 7 miles from William P. Hobby Airport and 6 miles from the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world.
