Fifth Ward

Suburban Neighborhood in Houston, Texas

Harris County 77020 , 77026
$362,901 Average Value

Fifth Ward, referred to by locals as The Nickel, is a neighborhood just two miles northeast of Downtown Houston. Despite being adjacent to the Central Business District, The Nickel has a small-town feel. Most homes are ranch style and Cape Cods with manicured lawns, but contemporary style homes and townhouses can be found, too.

The local dining scene is mostly small businesses, with bigger-chain restaurants coming in with new development. The favored cuisine is predominantly influenced by southern comfort food as well as vegan fare.

Fifth Ward has eight schools within its limits. Wheatley High School was renovated in 1949 with state-of-the-art facilities and unique architecture. Atherton Elementary School is a fine-arts magnet school, with higher test scores than the state’s average. Young teenagers with an interest in science and math can apply for Fleming Middle School, an STM magnet school. Mikey Leland College Preparatory School for Men is an all-boys school that prepares its students for college, where teachers are highly rated for their engaging lessons and individualized care for the students.

Many residences of Fifth Ward live there to commute into Houston, which has major employers such as Walmart, McDonalds, and United Airlines. Fifth Ward provides easy access to the Texas Medical Center, with some of the country's best facilities, and the Houston airport.

Most locals do their shopping at Fiesta, Walgreens, Family Dollar or Target. For weekend fun, roller-skating at Lockwood Skating Palace is a popular spot. The ample churches of varying denominations help newcomers find a community within a community. For outdoor recreation, Finnigan Park has a neighborhood swimming pool and large green spaces. Brewster Park offers spacious courts for playing different sports.

Locals love supporting locally owned businesses with southern style comfort food, such as Frenchey’s Chicken. For lighter options, Vegan cuisine is increasingly popular. New plant-based restaurants have been popping up, like Sunshine’s Vegan for completely vegan burgers and nachos.

Fifth Ward hosts an extraordinarily rich arts scene, where art is accessible to all. The Cultural Arts District is a section of Fifth Ward offering art studios and live entertainment in historical buildings, such as the DeLuxe Theater. Visitors of the theater can attend artistic workshops, view live performances and even films.

BARC Adoption Center, a locally loved shelter, often offers adoption events and fundraisers for animals in need.

Just a short trip on the highway from Fifth Ward is Houston, where locals can visit the Houston Zoo, beloved by children and adults of all ages. There is also the ever-popular Houston Aquarium, which offers touch pools, and sprawling sea life exhibits, as well as all the other attractions downtown Houston has to offer.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
