Sixth Ward
From bungalows to Victorian-style homes
Homes were primarily built during the 1870s and 1900s, resulting in architectural styles such as bungalows and Victorian-style homes. Many of the Victorian-style homes were a result of properties being restored in an effort to protect Sixth Ward's history. Prices range from $400,000 to $ 785,000. Most residents rent, making up about 60 percent of the population, while the remaining 40 percent are homeowners.Enrolling at Heights High School
Children can begin their education at Travis Elementary School, rated A-minus by Niche. They can then continue to Hogg Middle School and Heights High School, both receiving B-plus ratings. Heights High School offers the (IB) International Baccalaureate Programme and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. The school's Magnet program makes the institute unique, funneling students into the Computer Academy, Health Science Academy, Business Academy, Engineering & Design Academy and Transportation Academy.Skating at Buffalo Bayou Park
There are various green spaces to visit in Sixth Ward. One option is Dow Elementary Park, located next to the former Dow Elementary School. The park is about a quarter acre in size and offers amenities such as a unique playground, basketball court and a covered pavilion. The Park for Humans and Dogs is exactly what the name suggests: a hybrid location that functions as both a dog park and a green space for people without four-legged friends. Another option is Buffalo Bayou Park, a personal favorite of Mock's, which has "the best skatepark in the city," known as Jamail.Shopping & Dining in Sixth Ward
There are plenty of shopping and dining options available at Sixth Ward. One of the dining destinations is Aiko, a Japanese spot on Washington Avenue considered one of Houston's best restaurants. Another destination is Henderson & Kane General Store, a barbecue restaurant on Henderson Street with a menu packed with brisket, pulled pork, sausage, etc. The Sixth Ward is also home to multiple breweries, such as Holler Brewing Co. Holler Brewing Co. rotates its selection of ales and lagers based on the seasons and the lunar cycle. For groceries and other needs, residents can head to Studemont Street and Sawyer Street to shop at Kroger, Target, PetSmart, and Home Depot.Visiting art exhibitions
Sawyer Yards is a creative community that consists of a dozen properties. Some of these buildings house various galleries and temporary art exhibitions. These studios are open to the public on the second Saturday of each month, allowing locals to view a wide range of work and speak to the artists. Just outside the Sixth Ward is the Downtown Aquarium, a 6-acre complex with 500,000 gallons of aquatic space and hundreds of marine species.Traveling with Amtrak
Sixth Ward is located northwest of Downtown Houston, about a 2-mile drive away. Houston Avenue is one of the connective thoroughfares. For out-of-town trips, residents can take the Houston Amtrak Station, located on Washington Avenue.
