A neighborhood with a historic flair

Located West of downtown Houston, Sixth Ward is one of the city's historic districts and is home to the oldest neighborhood in Houston, known as Old Sixth Ward. The town has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. As of 2007, the ward was listed as a Protected Historic District, with ongoing preservation efforts. Residents of Sixth Ward enjoy the elements of the past that still remain, as well as its new amenities, such as parks and restaurants. "It's such a cool area –-- I've hung out there quite a bit! It has historic architecture, great views of the city, and lots of walking, biking and hiking trails," says Ethan Mock, a lifelong Houston resident.

From bungalows to Victorian-style homes

Homes were primarily built during the 1870s and 1900s, resulting in architectural styles such as bungalows and Victorian-style homes. Many of the Victorian-style homes were a result of properties being restored in an effort to protect Sixth Ward's history. Prices range from $400,000 to $ 785,000. Most residents rent, making up about 60 percent of the population, while the remaining 40 percent are homeowners.

Skating at Buffalo Bayou Park

There are various green spaces to visit in Sixth Ward. One option is Dow Elementary Park, located next to the former Dow Elementary School. The park is about a quarter acre in size and offers amenities such as a unique playground, basketball court and a covered pavilion. The Park for Humans and Dogs is exactly what the name suggests: a hybrid location that functions as both a dog park and a green space for people without four-legged friends. Another option is Buffalo Bayou Park, a personal favorite of Mock's, which has "the best skatepark in the city," known as Jamail.
